Struggles with the 10
« on: February 20, 2005, 10:07:56 AM »
Well, I've got a problem I consider to be worth some advice. I have an awful time when I end up leaving a ten pin. A few months back, I purcashed a big blue spare to help with the problem. Previously, I had tried to stand cross ally and throw my Hexplosion at the ten. Often times, the ball would go right at the ten and hook a few boards and barely pick it or barely miss it. Enter the big blue spare. It took a little getting used to with this ball to shoot at the ten, but it has helped my conversion percentage. If I had to guess, I'd say I pick around 70 % of these spares. Any other single pin spare I have no problem. I probably pick around 90% of all my other single pin spares. What I'm basically looking for from you guys are tips or practice techniques I can use to become more efficient on the ten. I think a lot of it is confidence involved. I've tried flattening my wrist, but this seems to effect my accuracy....bring on the help ladies and gents!

Practice, practice, practice.  Everyweek I practice a couple of games where all I do is cherry pick the 7 and the 10.  It really is that simple, once you find a shot that converts it, you need to train your body to repeat that blasted shot every single time.  You'll miss one on occasion regardless, the best do as well, but if you shoot an extra 20 10 pins a week, it won't be long before it's a spare you become almost automatic on.  A fun way to do this is golf bowling with a buddy, lowest scores win, gutters count as strikes.  If you finish a game in the 30's, your doing pretty darn good.

You'll put yourself easily into the 90-95 percent range if you do that every week, if not the 99% range.  There is no trick in the book that doesn't work without practice.  Find a spot that works, and shoot the hell out of it.  I was like you, shooting 65-70% on them, but once I started the practice, the % jumped.  I've recently had sets where I've gone 12-12 and 14-15 on tens respectively.

there's your winner...

i've greatly improved my corner shooting by visualizing a three board wide path from the arrows to the base of the pin. just have to throw down that channel.

Yup, finding the solution that works for you and with which you feel comfortable is the best asset to get the 10-pin. It is not difficult at all (in fact, the 10 is an eays single pin leave), all you need is practice/consistency and confidence.

Myself, although I am playing fingertip as a 250 RPM stroker, I play the 10 and 6 pin with a polyester ball which I let go with my thumb completely directed downwards, no lift on the ball, just skid. For the 10 I stand on the 27th board with my right shoe tip and aim at 13th board - anywhere. For the 6 and baby splits I stand on the 25th board with the same target. It takes some adjustments to the oil pattern with my release, but th
is works fine anywhere!

I tried other solutions (throwing the spare ball like my strike ball with rotation and more speed), but this remnant from conventional grip time still works best for me?

Good luck!

I used to struggle with the 10 pin and now my conversion rate is easily 80% plus.

Here's what works for me using a plastic ball:

I stand on 34 1/2(I'm small framed) and aim for the 4th arrow.  I just come straight through the shot and throw the ball on the diagonal.  I've found that the most important thing is to keep my eye on my mark until my hand passes it.  If I miss it's usually because I lifted my eyes prematurely which causes my arm swing to drift a little left or right of my target.
