Bowling Job Questions and Pointers
« on: July 25, 2006, 09:34:21 PM »
I applied for a job at the local bowling alley as as Pin Chaser or the guy that gets ur ball if its stuck or gets the pins that are out of range, etc. But Im not sure whatelse there is to it. I dont want to look like a fool so i was wondering does anyone know the basics and can give me some pointers. I kind of know how the machine works and all but I've never seen the back of one in person. I will be trained but I'd like to be ahead of the game when I go for my interview tonight.

The best advice I would offer would be to go into the interview and be yourself.  Be honest with them and tell them what you are sure you know (not what you think you know).  I would get all training from the employer since they will likely have set policies and procedures to be followed.

Commit to being at work on time whenever scheduled, doing whatever job may be assigned to you without complaining, and generally being cooperative and polite.  And mean it.  The center will train you on what you need to know.  I would be amazed if you don't get the job.  --  JohnP

Yeah, you'll get the job as long as you appear to be friendly and able to listen and learn.

Don't expect it to be a glamorous job, as you may be asked to do unpleasant things such as bathroom cleanup or the like. But I didn't mind doing the as I used the time to learn the machines as well as I could (I learned the Brunswick A2s) mostly by reading the service manuals and parts books on slow league nights and sometimes just watching the machine and learning what each bit and piece does in operation. That way if you feel like it would be something to pursue farther, you will have that knowledge handy. You can also spot potentional problems beforehand if a machine is particularly slow returning a ball or something like that.

As others have mentioned, watch and learn as each person has different ways to teach these machines. Also, if you get the job, always be aware that these machine can bite, and bite hard if you don't always pay attention to safety procedures. After running a finger or two through a pully I learned real quick to take safety precautions and not try and shortcuts.

I will be getting a job at my local bowling alley in September, when I turn 16. I don't mind cleaning up the place, stocking beer, getting dead wood, help people with scoring, etc. I don't really want to work behind the desk but I will if I have to. Now, some of you have said it's easy to get a job at a bowling alley. But what if there is no room? What if the owner is too cheap to hire someone? If he is, then it's not that easy to get a job.

i've been working at my center for close to a year now doing mechanic, porter, and snack shop work.  I'm not gonna linger on and on, so here are some key points:

* KNOW YOUR SCHEDULE AND ALWAYS BE ON TIME
* WORKING AT A CENTER IS NOT AS EASY AS IT IS CRACKED UP TO BE
* IF YOU DON'T KNOW THE ANSWER TO SOMETHING, ASK; DON'T GO ABOUT DOING SOMETHING WITHOUT APPROVAL AND OR NOT KNOWING IF YOU'RE DOING SOMETHING IN THE BEST POSSIBLE MANNER
* EVERY POSISTION AT YOUR CENTER WILL SEE DAYS WHEN IT IS CRAWLING OR GOING APE
* STUFF ALWAYS NEEDS TO BE CLEANED AT YOUR ALLEY.  IF YOU THINK EVERYTHING IS GOOD, THERE WILL STILL BE SOME OBSCURE THING TO CLEAN TO FILL TIME
* MOST CUSTOMERS ARE IDIOTS, YOU JUST HAVE TO BEAR THAT FACT AND TREAT THEM WITH RESPECT
* IT SHOULD TAKE ABOUT A YEAR BEFORE YOU BECOME SOMEWHAT EFFICENT IN THE WORK YOU DO
* ENTER THE JOB WITH AN OPEN MIND AND A READINESS TO LEARN, AND YOU'LL DO FINE

best of luck

Be on Time
Always work the shift you have been scheduled for
Be polite to the customers no matter how many nit-wits you encounter
Remember this simple rule: The boss may not always be right, but the boss is boss!
All this and you will probably get promoted!

They won't expect you to know everything right away.Just be ready to go when a call comes get to it as fast as you can and absorb as much as your brain can handle. Most problems other than a part breaking can be easily fixed. Are you working on AMF or BRUNSWICK pinsetters? there is a pretty good difference between the two. If you have anymore questions I may be able to help I have been pinchasing for awhile myself.
