Need some help from you guys...
« on: December 15, 2003, 10:12:29 PM »
Well to start, I was quite honored when my proshop guy/coach came to me for help. He says "You're becoming quite the ball expert, so maybe you can help me".

Well, this is what he asked me to look for. Apparently he has a friend who is having trouble with all of the equipment he currently throws. His friend throws 14# equipment but is having trouble because many of the ball companies have gone to using the same core in their 14-16# balls. He is having a hard time controlling a 14# ball with a 16# core in it. So, I am sent on a mission to find ANY balls that are 14# with cores designed specifically for a 14# ball. I dont know any lane conditions or anything like that so all and any recommendations are welcome. What do you guys have for me??

I believe Brunswick modifies the cores of the lower-weight balls to maintain the same RG and RG diff across the line.  I assume that's what you mean when you say "cores designed specifically for a 14# ball."

Post this message in the Big B forum, and I'm sure someone will confirm or refute my belief.

an interesting question . . . you made a statement that ball companies are generally using the same core in their 14-16 lb equipment.  are they?  the shapes may be the same, but i don't think that the weight of the core is the same.

i'm no scientist, but if the core is the same, wouldn't the RG get smaller as the ball became lighter?  a 16lb ball would have more filler/cover weight than a 14lb ball, and thus i think the RG would be higher with the 16lb ball.

i went to columbia's site, and most of their RG's actually get higher as the weight gets lower . . . the opposite of what i thought would happen.  ebonite's balls stay almost identical with the weight drop.

i think that the cores and weights of the cores are unique for each weight.

am i thinking right here?  if so, you sure could impress them with your vast knowledge of ball dynamics!!

BadShot and Seadrive, both good points. However, as far as I know, some ball companies are using the same cores in 14-16 pound equipment. Not sure how they do it or what other things they need to do to the ball to keep the rg higher or lower. But, they are doing it. I am not sure what companies or what lines of equipment though, thats why I come to you guys!!
