USBC Rules Question
« on: December 06, 2010, 07:27:24 AM »
Can a team have a high average bowler on their roster if the bowler only shows up the first week ?  the guy doesn't have to pay if he doesn't show up to bowl, and I think his team is using is high average as an unfair advantage.  His absence score is only five pins below his 230 average.  If they take a vacancy score of 130 the handicap provides only 80% of the difference.  Can you see how using the absent 225 score provides them with more pins than the handicap of the 130 vacancy ?  If you compare the two options against the league average score of 160 (as an example), it's substantial.  With 225 instead of 130, the team gets an additional 28 pins.  So they are getting more pins with the higher average bowler (even though he never shows up) than they would if they had the spot as a vacancy.  In one week they won two games by less than 28 pins, so by the end of the season the number of games won may be a great deal more than it should have been.  Is this USBC legal ? or does there have to be a league rule prohibiting it ?

I dont know about your league but our rules are that the score you GET to use is the person with the HIGHEST NUMBER of games.  You get his average minus 10 pins plus handicap.  If there is a tie in the number of games by two players on that roster you get to use the one with the lowest average...

They should be getting the Vacancy score for that bowler.  If nobody is paying for the absentee score bowler, than the house is losing out on linage and the league is losing prize fund.  Since the team is not giving money to cover that bowler, the bowler is Vacant and not Absent.

In my opinion they are screwing the other teams in the league.

Your house rules overrides whatever is the book..
I have seen this happen serveral times...
Would suggest calling a meeting if you are that concerned..

Personally I think its a disadvantage because they get less pins with that high avg...

Bowling for beer .. I can't figure the 28 pins you refer too,

The missing bowler has an average of 225 he would get 80% of the difference of 230 .. I figure that to be 4 pin handicap .
  .. giving him a 229 Blind!

If the team used a MISSING BOWLER score .. it would be 130 and a handicap of 80 with a blind of 210.

The team would have an advantage of 19 pins per game and 57 advantage in total wood.

Very UNFAIR advantage!

I find all these rules so funny. Because most leagues create these overriding rules because they feel there is some advantage given with USBC rules.

They change the rules. Now you get a whole different set of circumstances and what they thought was better is now mess. Then you have a league meeting. Another set of rules is put in place. Its never ending. Sometimes the USBC rules are good enough.

Thanks everbody.

Joe,

Our league doesn't base handicap on a set number (e.g., 245), but rather 80% of the difference between the two team averages.  So the higher average team gets no pins, but the lower average team gets 80% of the difference.  So, I just based my calculations on a hypothetical average just to see what the difference is and how substantial it may be.

You say that nobody is paying for this bowler then how is the league allowing them to carry his average. In our league you can not carry someones avg. for more than two weeks if there is no money in the envelope. The team should be carrying what ever the vacancy avg. is by  your league rules.

I'm don't think there is a USBC rule governing this situation, it should be covered in your league rules.  --  JohnP
