Then why have staffs?
« on: August 26, 2008, 11:36:46 PM »
In another thread it was asked if you buy a ball because of some others bowler’s good review or success throwing high scores.

Most replied that it made little or no difference to them.

If that is so then what is the incentive of a ball company to have staff members and/or put seed balls out?

If other bowlers are not impressed by what they see and read then the ball companies are wasting their money on these staffers.

The truth is bowlers are impressed by what they see both on the lanes and on TV.

When I worked in a proshop, the days after a ball did well on TV on the tour you would have a run on those balls. Sometimes we would sell 8 balls in a day or until we ran out of stock.

TV exposure did sell balls.

The biggest problem I see today is that the balls on TV are not available yet to proshops. By the time the shops get them they are now having the pros throwing another new release.

I agree very much with those who say the people on BR aren't as affected by the hype and what they see scoring well, as opposed to Average Joe.  I usually have a somewhat small arsenal for any given day, including turnaments.  Mostly because I can't get a ball whenever I'd like, but also because if you buy balls wisely, more than 5 balls plus a spare ball is just gravy more often than not.

Out of all of my new ball sales, about 50% are based on what someone else saw someone else bowling with.  You'd be suprised how many bowlers of each and every demographic come into my shop asking for information on a ball because they saw someone in their league throwing it or they saw one of Nick or Britton's videos.  Ask your local proshop this same question and the answer will suprise you.

I'm not one to buy into the hype on the latest and greatest, but after seeing all the success last year with the Cell in both leagues around here and on TV,I bought a barely used on from a BR member.

So what BR posters are saying that they are above the hype of reviews and seeing the balls thrown but that the "normal" league bowler is not.

Even BR members don't purchase equipment - ball, shoes, bags, what have you - on a whim.  They consider what others say about the equipment, or watch how others have succeeded with the equipment, or seen what the equipment looked like on/with another person, or read the advertising on the equipment.

To which of those four things do staffers contribute? All of them.

Sure, it might not be a staffer that is the complete and total influence that makes the final sale, but they are the best representatives of the company in their marketing campaign.

If you want to sell cologne, you don't use skunks to model it.

I bought my Rival and Counter Strike on a whim for what I wanted out of them.  Unfortunately, the CS is almost a failure because I can use my Rival in just about any situation the Counter Strike would work.  However, I got my Avalanche Solid, mostly because of the things across the internet I've heard about it and I was dying to throw one.  So yeah, I've learned my lesson and I will not buy a ball without either seeing it in action or get lots of positive feedback on it first.
