Thin Cover Stocks?

Ever notice how thin the covers are getting on some bowling ball. The Plum Groove I got is about 1/2" thick. I noticed some of the hammer and ebonite covers are pretty thin also. Is this a cost saving design for the manufactures? I'm wondering if this is why some covers are starting to crack more frequently.

My ball driller is always amazed at how thin the coverstocks on Brunswick, and Ebonite/Hammers are as compared to Storm, Columbia, and most other companies.  He also notices the cores aren't as dense in Brunswick and Ebonite/Hammers.  Big difference now and back when Hammer was making their own stuff, they used to have very thick shells back then I believe.

I've also noticed the thin shells in almost every piece of new equipment.

For the experts out there: Are these thin shells used in order to fit the larger weight blocks or what?

Also, would a thinner shell be more prone to oil saturation (not absorption, but saturation) than a thick shell? After all, there is less area for the oil to go into. Does the filler material absorb oil? It seems like a thicker shell could absorb more oil before becoming completely "oil-logged".

Is any of this true or am I totally missing it?
