Ok, I made a pretty expensive mistake today. I was drilling a Throttle/R (the pearl one), and the fingers went great. Went to drill the hole for the thumb slug, and when I finish the initial 1 1/4th hole, I always slide my finger down into the hole, because sometimes the transition from the shell to the core, or inside block is a little off, because the materials inside the ball are softer sometimes. Well, with this ball, it seems that the inside is softer than normal. There was a noticeable difference in the hole at the line where the shell meets the inside. The inside was smaller, so I went much more slowly with the drill bit this time. It took a little bit more out, but still not enough. Against my better judgment, I went ahead and tried to stick a slug down in there, and it went halfway in, and then wouldn't budge. It wouldn't go any further no matter what I did. So I got the slug/plug cutter out and cut it down. The only problem was that I forgot to reset the pitches before I cut it . . . Yeah. Big uh-oh. I ended up putting a gouge in the ball. Nothing a resurfacing wouldn't fix, but who wants to pay 200+ for a brand new ball just to have a cosmetic defect in it before they even throw it? It would have been right in his palm. At least it was for one of my buds, so the boss is gonna order him a new one and he's cool with it, but it really irritated me. I've never made ANY error drilling since I got the hang of it (since November), I always double and then triple check things to make sure it's alright. I was rushing myself today, because I realized I didn't have the slug color he wanted, so I made a new batch, and I was hurrying to get it done, and when the slug wouldn't go in, I kinda panicked. Don't know why, but I was busy today, and wasn't able to get it done before he got here, so he went to eat while I drilled it. I have a really low tolerance for my own mistakes, hence I make SURE I don't make many, if any at all. But back to the ball, the inside really made me wonder. It seemed almost flexible to the drill bit. There's nothing wrong with the press, and the entire hole is perfectly cylindrical. It's just that the hole gets smaller below the shell. Really REALLY irritating. There goes my bonus this month . .

The only difference between youth and adult leagues are that the big boys are allowed to whine. They're more entertaining anyway.
