Thinking about changing ball weight
« on: July 05, 2009, 04:22:21 PM »
I've asked this at another place but I'll ask here as well.

Here's my dilema again:

What are the advantages and disadvantages of going from 15 to 14 pounds?  I really like the feel of 14 better, like I can really free up my swing with 14 lbs but I don't think it might be the best decision to do so.

I made the move las season. My wrist was not killing me but just felt 'funny' and I went to 14. My swing felt 'easier' I didn't notice any loss in pin carry it just felt right.

I have been working more with weights and the wrist is better so I drilled a couple 15s and going to try to step up this year but kept a couple 14's just in case. The swing is not as smooth right now but got to see for myself.

Keep in ming your game may suffer the first few times on a weight change. Timing, speed etc but if you are going to do it, do it now, practice get the bugs out and don't put pressure on yourself to have it work the first time out.

Give it time.

Go to the 14# if it feels better. It has been proven with throwbot that the difference in carry is miniscule. Watch the dif #s on the balls you buy tho. Some 14s have higher difs than the 15 some lower.

I went down some yrs ago, then tried to go back up.Went back down after I rehurt my wrist and have stayed there ever since. The only thing I miss is the swing weight of the ball to pull the ball thru the bottom of the swing. For that I found a Ebonite glove with a # of weight in the back of it. I now have the swing wt but not the pull on my wrist itself.

Hopefully this will make your decision easier...

A swing is a non-manipulated motion. This means that the ball weight should swing without you having to control or hold onto it. If the weight is too heavy, you will be prone to manipulate it, which creates injuries and diminishes performance.
Second factor is matching up speed with reaction. Ball speed is a good thing but not if you are throwing it through the break point. But if the weight is too much, then you decelerate which creates unnecessary over reaction and control.
When bowling balls are designed on a CATs system, optimum core to cover distribution is 14lbs.
The last factor is comfort and ease. If it feels better, than use the lighter weight.
Bowling balls pick up speed from the top of the swing through release, comparable to G-Force. Usually 3-4 times. So a 15lb ball becomes a 45-60lb orb. Multiply this through 3 or 4 games.

Anyways, if you a comfortable with the 14lber, go with it. Give it time.
