thinking of going back to 16#
« on: January 29, 2006, 08:26:06 AM »
Why do some of you stay at 16#?

Randy Pederson said during the Dick Weber classic that Norm Duke still throws 16's because he wants all the hitting power a 16 has. Is that why you still use them?

Do you get better timing and a less muscled swing with them?

Some use 16# to help keep their ball speed and accuracy more consistant. Some just dont want to risk dropping from 16 to 15 because they are afraid that 1# will really mess up their game. Some like how the 16 feels over the 15. Everyone has their reasons.

I decided not to use 16 and went to 15, 15's have just as much hitting power and carry as a 16#er does. I dropped cause the weight was wearing me out by the 3rd game and my whole right arm was sore or irritated.

I use #16 pound equipment for a few reasons:

1. I have no problem with fatigue with it yet.
2. I have used #15 and my speed seems to fast....missing breakpoint.
3. I have a significant amount of cash invested in #16 equipment.
4. I find that #16 stuff is cheaper to buy new or used on-line.
5. I am a real man therefore I throw #16!  LOL... Here comes the bashing!

I use 16 .. really have NO REASON at all other then I've always thrown that weight! I have bought some 15 pound balls where I was looking to try the product and there was a GOOD BUY! All purchases made on NEW equipment was at 16 pounds.

I don't see any difference between 15lb and 16lb equipment.  This is my first season throwing 15lb equipment and I feel that I will never go back to 16lb equipment again.

my carry improved when I dropped to 15 from 16. It gave the ball jsu a little more deflection which turns into more pin action most of the time!! I dropped to 15 because i messed up my shoulder years ago. No ill affects throwing 15, i could bowl all day!!

Agree completely with STR on this.  I'm going to 14 lb. for better inside usage.  I need more speed inside with entry angles like you see at Natl's I think lighter will help carry.

If, I was playing heavy slick lanes straighter I'd go 15 or 16.  Guys like Duke & Voss have ability to change their release to play straighter others don't.

I'm rev dominant STR and I've seen enough times on flatter patterns like Nat'ls where I have to play deep inside that a lighter ball will carry better than a heavier ball.  It just means the ball and your technique have to match up.....revs, axis rotation and tilt with weight/core/ball surface and pattern you are bowling on.

Just have been what I am seeing on lighter volume flatter patterns.  THS heavier patterns and China I would definietly agree 15 to 16 lbers are better.

I love the carry that Norm Duke and Brian Voss get with 16 on hits that look very questionalble!

I have thrown a 299 with 16 that frankly looked like a normal 230's game before!

I believe there are two more carries a game with em but that is what my eyes tell me ...therefore you can't conclude anything!

Just my two cents, but bowling rules have set the maximum weight of a bowling ball to be 16 pounds.  If that rule was to change tomorrow to eighteen pounds, I'd be throwing an eighteen pounder....

funny this topic occurred.  After discussing things with Tenpinspro, he suggested and I agreed that a move to 16#'s is in order.  I've been slumping and honestly feel as though 15#'s hasn't generated the 'feel' that good bowlers experience.  Since I've been toting my daughter around (she's a little over 16#'s), 15#'s no longer 'feel' right.  So, I'm going to grab a used 16, have it drilled to fit and give it a try.  I've only used 16 once and that was many many years ago.

one way to find out....

About a week ago I made the decision to go back to 16# equipment.  I have used 15# for about a year and a half.  I was testing some old equipment a couple of weeks ago and just felt the 16# carried better for me.  I am going to keep my 15#s, but all new balls i buy will be 16#.

I am speed dominant and it appears the 16# carry the half hits a little better.

Thanks all for your responses.

I wonder if a mix of 15 and 16"s is the answer?

Lately it seems that there is a dead spot in the pocket for me. High flush will carry and light swisher will carry but that in between seems not to. My buddy that drills my stuff and I seem to be able to call them when they happen but it is difficult for me to describe.

For 16# = I use #16 wish they would allow more #'s. I've always thrown 16#.  If your tall, good health, have a few muscles here and there, once you become accustomed to the 16, it would be tough to go lower.  I fear I would fire the ball too hard = speedster monster. I've had several balls accidently purchased careless pro shops in the 15.6 to 15.8 = Speed demon for my game.

15 or 14 pounds =
Personal preference, gaining more speed, aging body, or in the case of some performance balls - it is said to tame them down a bit (=better carry??? I would think very little carry difference between #15 & #16).

I see the other side also.  If physical attributes, or injury are an issue.  Of course, NOT a he man issue, 16 pounds is the limit = rather light in the bigger scheme of things.

Whatever feels comfortable and performs well.

The only time I can see a real advantage to 16's is on a flood.  16's will slow me down a hair and therefore get into a roll very slightly sooner.  I do suspect that some folks have a roll that works better with 15's and some better with 16's.
