Battling used conditions... Ball suggestions
« on: November 30, 2011, 07:42:18 AM »
My brother is bowling at a center that does not provide fresh oil,  they oil for the special olympics league in the afternoon and then there are open bowlers then league starts.  I bowled three years there under the same circumstances and also worked at this place.  I can tell you he does not properly maintain his lane machine, therefore old oil isn't completely removed before new oil is distributed.  This causes a pair of lanes to be drastically different in some circumstances.  The other problem is that old oil is being pushed to the pin deck causing a bunch of pin sliding issues.  It was a daily thing where a pin would slide off spot after being hit and not fall over stalling the machine.  These are AS-90 Brunswick machines, only a few years old, already looking crappy.

I am a rev dominant player, above average speed and rev rate.  I would start the night with something agressive, progressively moving left.  Oddly enough into the second game at some point I would lose reaction and have to move back right eventually switching to a less aggressive ball.  My brother is struggling mightily and I think it's because of a lack of a lighter oil piece.  He managed a small 600 series after trying to come up the back of the ball more  and increasing ball speed like I suggested, but it's causing some old shoulder issues to resurface.

I guess I am asking two questions
1. What is the best way to approach conditions like this?
2. What would be a good light oil ball for him, I suggested the Silver Recon RX-1 from Motiv since I own one and have had good experiences with it.  But I am not to well read up on light oil stuff so some other input would be appreciated.  Thanks

I (with my bowling style) would keep the hook small and use a ball with a weak but open surface. My first candidate to try would be my old black Pure Hammer (low RG, urethane-resin blend cover). These are dreadful conditions I happen to come across in my traveling league, where we sometimes have to play in rather fun-oriented houses where the word "oil pattern" causes panic in the laneman's eyes...

Anyway, what could work is something that has been a bit out of fashion: a high RG low-load particle ball with a polished surface, something like the Purple Pearl Power Groove Proactive OOB or the more common Black Sparkle version, just with high gloss polish. Sadly, these have been discontinued a couple of years ago, but they filled just that niche. As long as there's still some head oil left these things are very effective on spotty lanes, very stable, and with some hand you can drill such a piece pretty weak.

I am not certain whether the silver RX-1 handles carrydown and greasy lanes well? Another idea would be an Avalanche Urethane or a Natural - either OOB or with the polish knocked off for some more/earlier traction.

If the lanes are spotty as you suggest, the "straigher is greater".  The fewer boards you cross, the better off you will be.  User a hybrid coverstock ball as they seem to be less sensitive to oil breakdown/movement.  If you must cross a lot of boards, then I sugges you move deep deep inside to stay out of everyone elses used lines.  This will give you a cleaner shot to the pocket.  Be patient, keep the ball in play and pick up your spares.

Thanks for the suggestions, the heads are usually pretty burned out by the time his league starts.  Balls are being thrown all over the place, and if you get a lane that some two finger house ball douche was using its generally worse.  The Blue Hammer re-release also came to mind as well, again it's just a guessing game, who knows what your going to see from week to week.  Every once in a while there is fresh oil, maybe 3-4 times a year and that's when all the 7's come out lol.

when lanes get so silly my plan of attack it to control the front part of the lane.  I usually go to a ball with some surface or a rico drill to do this.  These type of patterns are not usually high scoring so I'm trying to minimize my bad shots and hit the 1/3 to leave something I can make.  If I get a double in there that is a bonus.  Good luck. I hope it helps.
