There was a scratch tournament held in my area and the format went like this: Five three game blocks bowled on five different lane conditions over two days. Cut to the top ten bowlers who will bowl two game head to head matches. Draw for lane pairs. If you loose, you go home. The top five bowl step ladder.

The winner gets a paid entery into the ABC MASTERS in Reno if he meets the average qualification. Other wise he gets the $400.00, pay out 1 in 6 based on 30 bowlers and maximum field is 60 bowlers. $75.00 entry fee.

Well, I missed this one because I was called in to work and that may have been just as well. Only 11 bowlers entered and to top it off, this house is located within less than 100 miles of Reno and Carson City. Only 11 entrys, very,very sad.

Low turnouts are a problem just about evreywhere. As I read you description of the tournament, A couple of things caught my attention. One was the commitment for two days and the othere was the payout ratio of 1 in 6. Many bowlers would probably look at the two days and realize that it would commit the entire weekend. For me, that's not a problem, the payout ratio is. When I enter tournaments, one of the things I look at is the payout ratio. Anything higher that 1 in 5 will almost always a guaranteed non-enter, unless I know that there will be a fair number of entries and a decent amount of brackets.

Well, the Ladies Classic in Vegas was supposed to go on last week. But the Friday before I was due to leave, I got a phone call at 10PM telling me the tournament had been canceled.
It seems as though the "more elite" players felt there weren't enough entries to make it worth their time, so they pulled out, causing the entire event to be canceled.
So, not only is a potentially really good event canceled, I'm out the $100 fee to reuse my non-refundable plane tickets...
What is with bowlers today? What about the competitive aspect? I guess it doesn't mean anything, unless the tournament management can guarantee a check on a plate.

mumzie, I'm not asking for a guaranteed check, just a realistic chance at a check. Especially when it takes +181 to cash, like it did in the last 6-gamer I entered, 60 entries, $100 entry fee, 1 out of 6 cash ratio, the last check was at +180. I don't mind a scorable shot in a tournament, but when it takes a 230 average just to cash, something is wrong. I'm all for entering tournaments, but at some point, the high cash rato coupled with the high scores is going to make bowlers think twice about entering.

I'd rather enter the 4 game Sport Shot tournament held 90 min away twice a month for $30 that pays 1 in 4 and gets 60+ entrys every time, and compete for the $350 - 400 knowing that I've a realistic chance of cashing than enter something on a house shot that becomes a shootout and requres a 230 ave to cash.

1 in 6!!!!!!!, come to Australia where you get 1 in 3 at worst and some of our majors pay in 2, can you post the payout for that event cgilyeat? $100US is about $140 aussie and if any event over here tried that entry fee with 10 cash spots for 60 bowlers they wouldn't get 1 entry!!! Hell i bowled a $100 entry fee tournment early this year, first was $750, last cash was half your entry back for 30th in a 55 bowler field. As far as formats and payout ratios go i think us aussies do it better than anyone in the world(imagine the tour with 12 games qualifying in one block, extra 6 games for top 32 then cut to 16 for matchplay then stepladder.none of this elimination rubbish, leave that for high rollers and the masters!!)

Here's the payout, and the qualifying scores for the guys who cashed. The tournament guranteed $2000 with 90 entries, got 49, payout of 1 in 5, paid 10 places. Top 8 went to match play. I've deleted the names, but kept the scores for the 6 games of qualifying.

That payout is a bit top heavy by present aussie standards, go back 20yrs and you'd see similar prizefunds($3000 plus for 1st in some majors then, same now but with $6-700 for bottom of matchplay instead of $200-250) I guess both sides of the pacific ocean just have their different ways of doing stuff. Plus out here now in majors the top half of the field usually breaks par, so payouts have been extended from 1 in 3 to 1 in 2 to give the plodders some incentive to pony up, otherwise cash would be about 208-210av in many majors under the old structure.
