this is for the drilling gurus out there...

Take your typical once a week league bowler, average revs, average speed. (most of us) What percentage of them truly need a ball drilled any other way but label?

if they come in looking for something to roll early that might be a problem, the only thing is what do u classify as typical anymore. The typical bowler in the house i bowl in spins it due to our house pattern being toast on the out side and soup in the middle. Label is a very safe drilling and does work well for a large group of people, but now a days i think it will tame down reaction for some that you may not want to tame it down for.

Don't take this as a slam, it isn't. Now using your question/statement, the average commuter only needs a GEO.

In what I see, talk to the different folks it's way more than "need". It's a desire, a want to improve, feel they are better. IMO no matter what's said, if a person "feels" better about what they are doing, they will do better and be happier.

To sort of answer your question, for me, I only need a 4-4 1/2" pin/pap. I want something that'll rev up a bit earlier so I have one that will, do I make it work all the time ? Nope, but I do 'feel' I try and for that, I feel better about what I'm doing and trying to do.

Given the strength of many balls, one could drill them the same for just about everyone and tell them to make it work, one could do that but you'd loose customers and make enemies.

100% if you abandon ancient drilling theories and map out a bowling ball by a person's PAP.  "Label" for me is a 1 3/4 pin to axis distance, hardly the layout to hit the majority of conditions with.  In my pro shop database, I think my average customer PAP was around 4 5/8 > with 1/4-5/8 vertical.

Label, psssht.  Shred the Lane 1 drill sheet please.

I think you're correct, for all practical purposes. Label for me works out to 3.75 x 4, really close to a basic 4x4. When I say I drilled something "label," I see the eyes start rolling until I explain what exactly that ends up being for me.

If he had phrased the question as what percentage of league bowlers need anything besides 4x4, then I think he's probably right. That doesn't stop me from experimenting, though.
