1 person = 2 members on a team...
« on: January 04, 2004, 05:47:29 PM »
I'm a righty, paid sanction etc...

I was wondering, in order to bowl lefthanded in league, would need to establish a left handeded average, and pay a sanction fee?  If so, since I would be paid and sanctioned using the opposite hand, could then bowl as 2 people on a team?  I.e. me as a lefty and me as a righty?  While I'm not a bad righty, I throw lefthanded in practice for fun on occasion, and am capable of carrying about a 130-150 average lefthanded, and thought this could be a way to provide my team with a sub on short notice if we can't find somebody.  With handicap, it beats the blind score easily.

That is a FANTASTIC QUESTION! I can only speculate on an answer .. WHY NOT! According to ABC you are two different people .. I WOULD GUESS YES you can! Bet the opposing team will be WATCHING you real CLOSE!

I don't think so. I seem to remember that you have to be five individuals. Even in baseball, people who are ambidextrous have been barred from pitching using both left and right. They must pick one and stay with it.

(From the ABC/WIBC Rule Book)
Rule 118d.  If because of injury or disability a bowler finds it necessary to change delivery from right to left-handed or vice versa, the league's board of directors, by majority vote, may permit the bowler to change delivery.  If approval is obtained, the bowler must establish a new average.  A bowler may also obtain permission to alterante delivery, due to injury or disability, in accordance with the provisions of Rule 4c.

***

Rule 4c.  A player may, if granted permission by the ABC/WIBC and each league or tournament in which the player participates, alternate right/left-handed delivery and/or use special equipment to aid in the grasping and delivering the ball.

The aid cannot incorporate a mechanical device with moving parts that would impart force or impetus to the ball.

Permission may be granted by WIBC/ABC if the following is submitted:
1.  A doctor's certificate is furnished to WIBC/ABC, describing the disability and the reason to alternate right/left-handed delivery and/or recommending the aid.
2.  A description, drawing or model of the aid (only for mechanical aid).

When authorization is given, ABC or WIBC will provide the player with a special cardstating that alternating right/left-handed delivery and/or the use of  the specified mechanical aid has been approved by WIBC/ABC.  If permission is not granted, the player has the right to appeal to the WIBC or ABC Legal Committee.  Permission may be withdrawn for cause.

I was under the impression if a BOWLER decides to change hands for delivery that he has to re-register with the ABC .. same Social Security number but he has to identify the fact that he changed hands .. now if this same person was in another league and bowled with his ORIGINAL hand .. would he not be registered with ABC twice that year?

The original poster is asking can he bowl left and right and represent TWO bowlers on ONE team .. someone said NO .. and I asked if he can show the ruling in ABC that covers that. Someone suggested that the rules say INDIVIDUALS but the only reference I find is to BOWLER .. I .. like the original POSTER .. would like to know what rule PREVENTS this? Thanks!

LTWD .. sorry I posted without seeing your posting .. I was answering the door in the middle of my post and it took me longer to get it released .. Now that I've read it .. I don't know if that answers the original question .. that provides for a bowler who changes delivery from one hand to another .. indicating he has to establish a NEW AVERAGE .. the poster has gotten beyond that .. he wants to know if he has a right and left hand entry in the SAME YEAR .. can he be considered TWO people on one TEAM .. perhaps you CAN NOT enter in any ONE YEAR with LEFT and RIGHT entries .. I don't see that in writing .. Thanks .. perhaps it's unanswerable!

When I asked our association secretary, he said that if a bowler wants to bowl both right and left handed he has to pay the sanction fee for both sides.

I remember a year or two ago a guy who is a known problem bowled the ABC tournament using a left-handed average so he could be considered Classified, but then actually bowled the tournament RIGHT-HANDED and ended up in the lead in Classified All-Events.

Enough people complained on the bowl.com boards that he was disqualified along with his teammates and doubles partner.  I wonder if those people will ask him to bowl another ABC
