This makes me sad...
« on: July 13, 2016, 06:42:44 AM »
This will be a lengthy post,

Going off the post of a true honest bowlingball review has got me to thinking.....
This game obviously has changed over at least the last 30+ years (or more) where back in the day, it was all about mechanics, and fundamentals and repeatability, and accuracy, etc, etc;  But ever since the resin era has come out and evolved, it appears it's more about what the balls do than about what the bowlers' do physically, mentally, and mechanically on the lanes.

I have worked so hard the last 5 yrs to improve my game (lefty and can play all parts of the entire lane versatility) and while yes the conditions have changed and it's about matching up to the conditions and the right surface, you have to have the mental capacity to repeat shots, adjust, and make spares, REGUARDLESS of equipment used. I have no issue with the new technology as it benefits us all in some way, however, I wish bowlers' would focus more on their PHYSICAL AND MECHANCAL GAMES more then any performance ball made. Does anybody share my concern and frustration on this matter? Opinions welcome.

Ps. Bowling balls REGARDLESS of performance level are COMPLIMENTRY PIECES( meaning secondary to a bowlers' game first)  and NOTHING MORE!!!!

It didn't start with Resin, it goes farther back than that.

Back when Plastic balls first came out they looked at them like we look resin balls today.

Don Johnson talked about how they snapped into the pocket (which shows how much lane conditions have changed ) and Glenn Allison made the comment back then that plastic carried more garbage hits than rubber.

I could just see if they had the forums back then, you'd see all the posts about those young whippersnappers using those white dot cheater balls. ;D ;D ;D

That and the discussions that would have been had when they first started using 2 fingers and a thumb in the ball instead only one hole or two to grip the ball.LOL  ;D ;D

...ever since the resin era has come out and evolved, it appears it's more about what the balls do than about what the bowlers' do physically, mentally, and mechanically on the lanes.

It may appear that way but I don't believe it necessarily IS that way.  I think if you really participate in a PBA experience, or equivalent sport pattern league, you'll find that not only does premium execution matter in a physical sense, but you'll see the degree in which it still matters.  Obviously you have to know your arsenal but to dismiss the physical execution part (repeating shots) and mental game (especially on brutal patterns where striking is difficult) as a thing of the past is a bit much.

you have to have the mental capacity to repeat shots, adjust, and make spares, REGUARDLESS of equipment used.

**Regardless (drop the "u").  AHH it's like nails on a chalkboard!  :P

I'm not sure anyone is arguing that if you use specific equipment that repeating shots/mental/physical game just go out the window.  Certainly bowling balls are just tools for the bowler but it is still quite important to understand your "complementary pieces" in terms of RG/Diff/cover strength/cover prep.  I don't care if I'm throwing my Eternal Cell or my Hectic......execution is still incredibly important.

I wish bowlers' would focus more on their PHYSICAL AND MECHANICAL GAMES more than any performance ball made. Does anybody share my concern and frustration on this matter? Opinions welcome.

I worry about what I do.  Is it the existence of bowlers that think changing balls to accommodate "their line" that frustrates you?  I know a few of these bowlers and well........they'll always exist.  Just hope they get in brackets.....and always treat your customers with a smile.  ;D  ;)

At the end of the day, whatever keeps people coming back to the bowling centers and keeps the game alive is all that matters.  If people want to buy a $225 ball for a few more strikes per series, and it makes them feel better about their bowling, more power to them.

How people get their scores, whether through endless practice or good hand/eye coordination and muscle memory, or just gripping it and ripping it with a top of the line ball is really not something I concern myself with.  Everyone has the opportunity to beat anyone else, regardless of skill level, at any time in bowling.  That's what makes it a great sport.  There are never any guaranteed wins and there are endless styles, techniques, and methodologies used by people on the lanes.

Bowlers bowl, and others try to buy what others work hard for. For the best top notch bowlers bowling balls of any level are tools, for the rest of us it can become a paralysis. The bowling manufactures play a huge roll in that, but it is the consumers responsibility in anything to make the decision of what is needed vs wanted.

Many bowlers do not practice including many higher average bowlers. This is what is lost on many today. Practice, practice, practice....vs buy, buy, buy.

Any bowler who is bowling on the different sport conditions that are available can tell you how shot making, and spares are everything. Look at the scores from Nationals this year. All of the equipment in the world doesn't matter.

March 12, 1958, The Budweiser team of St. Louis - featuring future ABC Hall of Famers Ray Bluth, Don Carter, Tom Hennessey, Pat Patterson and Dick Weber - rolled an ABC record 3,858 series in Masters League play at Floriss Lanes in north St. Louis.

That is an average of 771 per man.  In that series two 300's were shot.

Lanes conditions determine the possibility for scoring more then the equipment. Lane conditions can take any ball(s) out of play today very easily.

Fellows, thanks very much for the constructive responses, many of you were relating to how I've felt in regards to my feelings of the game in my 23+ years involved, much appreciated.

Good to see people still care about the mental/physical/execution aspect of bowling. :)

"Bowlers bowl, and others try to buy what others work hard for."

I like that statement.

I agree that a certain ball will compliment the bowler on a given condition.  We see it all the time in league.  Bowler A is hitting pocket consistently but leaving corner pins.  He switches to another ball and immediately his game turns around...

For three weeks I've been getting killed on a 43 foot pattern that's 1:1 ratio with 33 mls of volume.  NOTHING hooks, and a 1 board miss will almost always miss the head pin.  I've tried so many lines to the pocket I'm dizzy.  I will keep trying because I love the challenge, but it's brutal on the ego.

I still believe that good mechanics, and the ability to read ball reaction will help a bowler over time.  Every dog has his day, and sometimes the "stomp and spray" guy is just going to kill it, especially on the easiest of conditions.  That will be of little value on the condition I described above...

The game can challenge us as much as we want it to.  Embrace the changes and find ways to enjoy bowling.  We'll probably all be doing it until the day we die.

I think skill level should matter. It does in every other sport.

In my opinion skill still matters in Bowling. In any sport any team or player can win on any given occasion. We see it in tennis, golf, and team sports like football etc.

House patterns typically blur the lines some and make "better" bowlers feel cheated it seems these days. When the lanes break down after a few games,  and the conditions for striking, carrying, and sparing get harder your better bowlers prevail.

I have to disagree. Today's bowling balls can take a tough lane condition and open it up for higher scoring.  You can't do that with Rubber, Plastic, or Urethane.
