To the original poster, I think it all boils down to the, "If people hear you 'speak the same language as the pros' then they must respect your skill in the same realm as the pros" mentality that a lot of average bowlers seem to have.  I'm sure that many of the people that say it don't 100% believe their own BS, it's just "a cool thing to say" to "elevate themselves" over their peers.

Rick, I "+1" DP3 post because for some reason it reminded me of this...

People see me with regional/staffer bowlers at the lanes, and other ppl think I'm a member or something they don't know I'm just a "joe bowler" like them....

I hope his post wasn't a "indirect negative"
