Those darn 10-pins again!
« on: May 09, 2010, 06:16:04 PM »
It was fairly common in league this season to struggle with leaving 10-pins in the third game.  That''s when I was forced to play around 16-17 or further inside to keep the pocket.  I tried to figure out the cause of the 10-pins, and I kinda came to the conclusion that it was too much angle, since adding axis rotation seemed to make it worse.  Breakpoints around 10 a little inside of that carried better than outside.

So I''m just trying to come up with a better plan to improve my chances of carrying the next time this happens.  Is decreasing axis rotation the answer?  Need to use a ball that reads the midlane more?

Because someone is probably going to ask, I couldn''t tell you the kind of 10-pin it was.  Some could have been flat considering some were half-pocket hits.  Not sure if any of theme were ringing, chances are the 6-pin would roll around in the gutter then fall in the pit which is still considered flat.  Very few actually just have the 6-pin lay in the gutter.

I know your 10 pin trouble in late games... What helped me recently is a release change. Also tried adding side rotation (kinda suitcase grip) fro added length first, but with waning oil this had been a daring measurement, due to over/under problems, and occasional steep entry angles or even Brooklyn hits.

In training I tried now something different: breaking back the wrist slightly (more or less that thumb and lower arm are in line), but instead of adding side rotation I'd keep the hand behind the ball. The result is promising for me: man benefit is a much more consistent breakpoint reaction. The ball is literally pushed through the heads, but with some finger action I get enough recovery to make it back to the pocket even if I miss to the gutter. The release won't allow deep lines for me though - it has been very effective so far between 1st and 2nd arrow, reducing entry angle but still allowing a good roll through the pin deck without burnout.
