Help me with my game (Lengthy post)
« on: February 24, 2014, 05:28:55 PM »
Let me start with a little background, feel free to skip over it to the question at the end if you dont feel like reading.

I started bowling on leagues about 3 years ago with a few friends. I was pretty bad.
At the close of last season, i was averaging 153. My averages now, are 191(Wednesday), 204(Thursday, sub only), and 188(Friday, sub only).
Heres what happened, i stopped subbing on Th. (team hasnt needed me), at the same time i stopped my other averages were 195 and 201.
That was about the same time i started really studying up online, reading articles, videos, watching the PBA and studying players, etc.
My game has basically took a nose dive since then, my friday average is currently 188 down from 201..
At the beginning of the season, i didnt have much power, didnt have much revs or hook. I was throwing 14-15 MPH with low revs, playing straight down the lanes pretty much most nights, and using a 3 step approach and a wrist brace.
Once i started studying more, i slowly switched to more of the typical power style, at the moment im anywhere from 17-19 MPH depending on the lanes, im getting decent revs in the medium range (Need to get out and measure them one night), and i moved to aggressive equipment and started moving left.
It killed my averages the last few weeks, im struggling to shoot even 600 most nights, which i used to do regularly.

That brings me to my main point, can you guys help me out with transitioning and adjusting to lanes?
From what ive been paying attention to, thats whats killing my game. Well, and spare shooting, but im working on that and its improving.

My Wed. league has been going like this, start off with my benchmark ball, (Lx16, 2nd most aggressive), have a good first game (190-210 range), then the second game once the lanes begin to burn up, i just get lost and end up going 160 or even worse, then having another 200+ game once i find my line.

Once the second game comes, i move left, which usually throws my aim off and i lose some accuracy. Moving doesnt help, it usually makes it worse. So ill go to a less aggressive ball and try to play a similar line to what i start with. That usually doesnt work either, and i end up circling through my arsenal and playing the third game with my Lx16 and doing ok.

I just can't adjust once the lanes start drying up. Friday night is the worst, they are the driest lanes i play on and midway into game one im searching all over trying to find something.

What can I do? Ive tried ball changes, ive tried speed changes, tried moving, tried hand changes. I just cant get comfortable on dry lanes.

I noticed something  today when i was practicing, after game 2 i started getting carry down from playing the same line, (at least i think thats whats happening), and if i slow down, my ball reads too early and jumps off the spot. If i move, it just goes straight through the breakpoint and doesnt turn. Tried different balls, same thing. Any slower than my normal speed (18-19) and the ball just reads way early and ends up through the nose or brooklyn.
Can someone tell me whats going on? That effect really messes with my mental game more than anything.

Lengthy post, i know. But thank you to anyone who can get through it and try to help.

Chances are the ball isn't seeing carrydown, but instead burning up.  The LX16 is a pretty strong ball.

My advice is to start logging each and every shot you make during league.  Write down where you plan on standing and what your goal is as far as the mark you are trying to hit.  When you finish your frame, record where you actually hit and what the result was.  Don't try to evaluate what is happening the first night or two.  Just log the data.  After the first week, go back and look for clues in what may be happening.  Are the lanes transitioning at the end of the first game?  Are you waiting too long to make a change?  Can you "predict" anything based on the resulting data?

You will find you can start making PROACTIVE moves and changes as long as the shot is somewhat consistent.  For me, I know the ball I start with starts to labor at the end of the first game.  Now, I don't wait for the ball to go high or not hook to make a change.  I pretty much change balls for the second game irregardless of my score.  I have changed balls after shooting 250+ even.

Maintaining this log will also help keep your mind clear by worrying more about what you are doing instead of what is happening.  Even the best bowlers start pressing when things aren't going well.  Just relax and let the game come to you.

Good luck.

It's an impossible question to give you an answer on based on what you've posted here.  A more general observation is getting more of a power game at the expense of accuracy is not going to help your game.  There's absolutely nothing wrong with playing straighter.  I'm not sure why people think they need to hook it across the lanes to be a successful bowler or to be a better bowler.
Hit the pocket and hope for the best

I also agree with the above.  No one knows what your real problem is, especially after a short self diagnosis on the internet.  As vkowalski1970 has stated, lessons from a knowledgeable coach could be the best advice.  I know you have looked online (videos) and the such to become better, you just don't know if you are properly implementing what you want.

My response was mainly to get a better understanding of lane play in general.  Too many people forget everything they experience in a night of bowling.  Documentation will go a long way in learning what to expect the next time you go out and encounter similar results.  The more experience you have, the better your adjustments will be.

I would suggest talking to your pro shop person to watch you. You may need to get your stuff redrilled. There is nothing wrong with playing down and in. Knowing how to hook the ball is good as well. Knowing how and when to use either one will come in time. If you have only been bowling for a few years there is nothing wrong with where you are at. Keep improving every year. As well as working with a pro shop on your equipment I would second the idea of working with a coach. Good luck to you.
