Those who dont do the ball maintenance thing...
« on: August 26, 2008, 05:43:47 AM »
Greetings BR dudes,

Ok, lets see the hands of those who really dont perform a weekly/daily or at all ball maintenance here.

I was just wondering for what its worth anyway, I think it might be kinda interesting as to how many people here dont do this.

Later All,

I have experimented with cleaning and not cleaning my equipment for much time. It seems as though the equipment I clean performs equal to the equipment I do not clean except in only one situation. The only time the balls I clean have a better reaction is with Ebonite made balls. All other companies seem to be better at holding their reaction with or without cleaning.

I don't clean my equipment that often.  I haven't seen a big difference in performance.  But, I only bowl 3 leagues a week

Never really have.

I wipe off the ball before throwing with a towel.

After 400 or so games I resurface or get a new one.

Never had a problem.

I don't usually wipe the ball off between shots unless there's a lot of oil or it gets into my grip area.

I clean my equipment after each set.  I spray it down in the track area with a little bottle of Legends cleaner, much to the consternation of my fellow bowlers.  Wipe it off with a microfiber towel, throw it in the bag.  I do irregular deeper cleaning on the spinner when I feel like I need to.  I haven't bowled regularly since March, so I haven't done a whole lotta cleaning.  My Yeah Baby has probaby 300 games on it and it's still the strongest ball I've ever thrown.

I don't know what's so funny about the comment regarding Ebonite-made equipment needing more cleaning than other manufacturers'.  This is hardly news around here and you'll find a hundred topics on "My Total NV or Black Widow or One or... died after 50/75/100 games" and another hundred about how my PK18 or Activator or Reactor or Super-flex or Soaker or Legends ball has 500 games and is still going strong.

I don't clean it after every time I bowl, more like whenever I feel it need it. I do take it to the shop and have it put in the rejuvenator every 2-3 months, and that seems to do the trick. I bowl 2 leagues a week, and my average has been steady for the last 5 years. Ball cleaner is expensive, and I just don't see the difference in cleaning it after each set.

I don't use ball cleaner anymore.  I only give the equipment hot water baths to xtract oil from the coverstocks.  Ball cleaner doesn't remove oil from the cover.  At least i've never seen great results of that after cleaning equipment. Hot water baths do work for removing oil from the coverstock.  I will usually give a ball a hot water bath every 75 games or so.

I use abralon pads and a ball spinner to adjust the coverstock grit of a particular bowling ball.  Abralon pads do a great job of removing belt marks and grim from the cover of a ball.

Interesting comments we have already. I also have a spinner and I do maintain my balls <i.e.> clean/polish/resurface

Its funny though as at where I bowl there are some Pros (no big names whatsoever) great league bowlers and great toury bowlers that have never even heard of a PAP or having a spinner to take care of your gear.

Heck, they frequently go to the "old" polishing machine to have their latest balls shined up...Oh-Well! what ever floats your boat

I don't clean my equipment, and i have a hard time noticing the difference between the reaction at game 20 and the reaction at game 1000 for pearls.  I have only noticed a difference in reaction in dull particle equipment.  For me its really not worth it to use a cleaning product after every 3-10 games.  I bowl 40+ games a week.  I throw storm stuff but I'm sure that every company makes good stuff.

I clean, adjust surfaces and polish alot.all my stuff looks darn near new all the time and I never have to give anything a major resurface since I keep up with cover maintence.the covers that tend to need the most work are the polished pearls and the solids need the least.I have found the Ebo made covers needed constant attention and the brunswick covers needed the least.plus most of the used stuff I sell on here looks very good and the buyer is usually very happy with them.
