thoughts about selling used stuff
« on: December 14, 2010, 12:23:25 AM »
So this is just a little rant, but lately it seems that selling used balls is a joke unless you have the absolute newest stuff or some old gems. Everything that i have been trying to sell is from the past 2 seasons and in good shape. I have stopped posting on here in the For sale section because low balling has gotten unreal. i dont see any problem with 50 plus shipping or even 65 shipped for single drill stuff that is in great shape.

Even trying to sell stuff to guys at league has gotten crazy. a guy that bowls on my league can fit my stuff pretty much perfectly, he just uses his IT thumb when he wants to try my equipment, then when he likes one he offers 30 bucks. im like wow, 30 bucks for a ball that costs 200? come on.

again, sorry for the little rant, but i just dont get it. last time i tried to sell stuff here i put 50 plus shipping for every ball i had and the highest price someone offered was 50 shipped to california, so i wouldve gotten 30 bucks, at that point i rather not waste my time boxing it and sending it out.

just my thoughts for the morning.

I used to get $50 plus shipping easy back in the day on Ebay (back in the day being 2005 or so) Heck I even managed to sell a near new but still drilled Big Hit for $60 plus shipping. But like others have said, when you can get brand new top of the line stuff for barely over $100 now, it's not worth spending a total of $70 or so on used anymore. I hate it too because I have stuff I'd like to move but it's not the "latest and greatest" and would barely fetch anything now.

Selling used equipment online is tough.  We all think our stuff is worth more than what it is actually worth.  I see nothing wrong with asking a higher price, which you probably will not get, but some folks have to try.  I've only sold about 10 balls online and the biggest problem I see is the shipping cost.  Many buyers want the seller to eat this cost.  I know, add the price of the ball and the shipping cost and the total price has to be reasonable for someone to buy it because the buyer may have to include pro shop costs for plugging and redrilling.  Bottom line, used balls online, will not net the seller much money.  So, I guess, used equipment online is a "Buyers" market.

I think another issue with selling used equipment on here/ebay is that people do not take care of their equipment. So "good" condition to them is going to be "poor" condition to me. I have seen people try and sell off balls that they claim have "less than 10 games" on them, but they look like they have been rolled in a parking lot.

This is just me, considering I have a ball spinner at home AND religiously clean my equipment immediately after every league session. I figure if I pay over $100 for a bowling ball, I am going to make damn sure it is going to last me for a while. I have a Cell which is almost 2 years old that hooks just as much as the day I bought it. I bet if I put that up here for $65 + shipping no one would even think of buying it, mainly due to their previous experiences with so-called "mint condition" equipment other sellers have listed.

Nothing against anybody here, but there is really not a good overall rating scale for the condition of used equipment, as everyone''s opinion of what is "good, fair, or poor" is different. People are reluctant to invest good amounts of money if they are not positive on what they are getting.

I think the best you can do is build a reputation, as I believe I have, for being completely honest as to the condition of the balls you are selling. I notice both here and on eBay, I frequently have the same buyers for much of my equipment.

Funny - in the midst of this discussion, I see a For Sale here of a USED Tropical Storm. The guy is asking "$75 shipped". No matter the condition or if there's only one frame on that ball, the asking price is inappropriate, to use the kindest word that comes to mind. One can get new one delivered (without drilling) for less than that price. I guess the guy did zero research on that ball or used balls at all, for that matter.

Jeff,

I just sold a Jig Saw Trap, low games, on its SECOND drill for $42 + shipping, and a Hammer Plague, FIRST drill for $62 + shipping, on eBay...They were .99 auctions. (The Plague had holes, never seen a lane, wasn't my ball).
It's a total cr*p shoot. I sold a low game, Hammer Hot Sauce Solid, this week for $39 + shipping, ball was worth more than the TRAP.

I have a smaller market, being a LEFTY.

I am done trying to sell used stuff on here.. I go through alot of stuff and always have had success selling my low game, well taken care of stuff on here but lately it has been impossible.. I guess it is a sign of the times..

Just kind of tired of the hassle of packing a ball up, driving to drop it off and hoping to make $25 bucks after shipping..

I have decided to just donate my stuff to the youth leagues in the area..

On a side note, I buy used stuff on here and always make sure its the layout I want and as close to my span as possible and all I have to do is plug the thumb and replace the grips. That is maybe $20 bucks total.. If I pay $65 to $75 shipped for a single drill high end newer release ball, I still have less than $100 in it and thats alot better than paying for a new one.. The ball is for sure worth that selling price to me.. Just my 2 cents..

Finger pitches do effect release, tilt, and axis rotation.  I am amazed at the amount of people that just buy a used ball and do not plug the fingers to make them consistent from ball to ball.  They just plug the thumb and are done with it.

What if you use 0, and the ball you get is an 1/8 to 1/4 reverse, what if it's the opposite.

Everybody wants it cheap, but nobody wants it done right.

Here's a couple of suggestions:

I've had success moving some of my single drill stuff by getting the pro shop to sell it on consignment.  They plug it, clean it up, put it on the shelf and sell it for an insanely low price. I get a percentage as a credit and they make a customer happy by selling them a "good ball" at a low price.

Or, I have a small circle of friends that I circulate equipment with. If I don't like a ball, I'll give it to one of them it they want to try it and they do the same in return. A couple of them don't make a lot of money. So, they get a relatively new, low game ball for the cost of a plug and re-drill and I don't have extra equipment laying around the house. As a bonus It makes it a lot easier to bring in new stuff when the wife only notices how many there are.

I'm sure the youth leagues appreciate the donations.  Also senior leagues could use them too providing they are not too heavy.

Personally for me it really depends on the ball. If I see a ball that is in good condition than 65 shipped or so is fine by me. My local shop charges 30 to plug the whole ball, 13 for the switch grip housing or 10 for the slug depending on what route I'm taking with that ball and 8 for inserts so I only spend like 115 on a ball which definitely beats spending 200 for a high performance ball. But if its on a low end piece that only costs 120 drilled from the shop here than its not worth it for me. So it really just depends on the ball for me.
