Throwing two different weights
« on: November 21, 2004, 07:25:49 PM »
Anyone use two different weights?

I'm having trouble on drier lanes so I'm thinking about going to 15lbs when the lanes get a little dry.

Thanks,
DW

I dont right now, but I may end up doing it for a little while to decide if I am actually going to go down to 14#.

Usually unless you have rock solid timing changing from 15 to 16 during your normal bowling game will throw most peoples timing off.  I throw 15# all the time but I throw 14# Plastic at spares mostly 7 pins.  In your case why not try a dry lane ball first if your comfortable with 16# every other time.  Then again maybe you should try 15# ball you may like it better most people now don't throw 16# anymore anyway unless you have a ton of ball speed and need to slow it down some.

I should just quit bowling, oh wait I already tried that.

I've thrown 15# balls for years and have just recently began experimenting with 14#. I like the 14#, but not sure if I want to go to it full time or not. The problem I have here is if I bowl a game or so with the 14# ball and then switch to 15#, the 15# feels like 18# and I struggle to get it out on the lane. It may be a case of this throwing my timing off as JRPLane1 says, I don't know. All I know is that I can't switch from 14# to 15#, but I can switch from 15# to 14# without any problem.

As for Pin carry, I don't see much difference between 14# and 15# other than it seems on real light pocket hits with the 14#, I seem to get more 2-10 and 2-4-10 and 2-8-10 splits than I do on 15#. However, I do seem to carry the 10 Pin a wee bit better with the 14# than the 15#. I advise sticking with one weight whether it be 16#, 15#, 14#, etc. In my case, I considered going to all 14# balls, but the problem is I would have to spend about $600-$800 for 3-4 new balls in doing this and to top it off, I have just recently bought a new 15# Depth Charge and Extreme and a 14# Triple X of which I would have to take a big loss in trying to sell the DC and Extreme (my two favorite balls) even though they look almost new. I guess I will have to sit on 15# for now and put my new 14# Triple X in the closet for now.

To sum it up, my advice for whatever it's worth recommends that people throw balls that all weigh the same.

For well over a year I had a mix of 15 and 16 pound stuff.  I had no trouble going from one to the other.  I was worried about going down a pound in the middle of a set - afraid I'd end up launching missles, but it didn't work out that way.  Now I'm at all 15's, but am thinking that if I need a new spare ball I might go to a 14.

I've been using a combination of 15 and 16 for over a year.  After a short period of getting accustomed to the 15's, I haven't had any problems.  I can switch from 15 to 16 or 16 to 15 in the middle of a game just as easily as I could if the 2 balls were the same weight.  I intend to eventually move to all 15's, but it's taking a while.$$$$$$

The ones who would have trouble are those who muscle the ball. I use a 16 for heavy oil, 14 and 15 for medium conditions and a 13 lb plastic spare ball.

Bones is probably right here and that is probably why I can't go from 14 to 15, but can go 15 to 14 because......I do muscle the ball. I've taken umpteen lessons from instructors trying to help me develop a free swing and it hasn't happened. I started muscling the ball with house balls that had oversize holes in the early 60's and was never able to break the habit after getting my own ball after using house balls for 4-5 years. Sooo, I muscled the ball then and do likewise today.

I use 16 lbs for my stuff that hooks and 15 for my stuff to go straighter. I prefer getting double length (ball speed, less surface), while creating maximum angle (due to extra release).
