THS
« on: November 03, 2008, 07:42:51 AM »
I went to the bowling alley today to bowl a couple games and noticed that the shot was completely different. I thought maybe it was the Viper, so I asked if it was a PBA pattern and I was told no. I work there so I asked the guy who oiled the lanes what the shot was. So come to find out the USBC came in today and they had to put down their "house shot". So he told me they had to change the pattern to make it USBC legal. This shot was a lot more difficult than the THS I have encountered. So what I got out of it is that most houses THS are illegal by USBC standards??? And if so, how do these bowling alleys get away with this.

I doubt that their normal THS was illegal they probably just wanted to re-run the lanes so they could be judged on their normal league shot.  The USBC has to judge fresh lanes.  Once a few games have been rolled, the shot can be very different from what was put out.  Maybe they had something special on a few lanes that someone requested to practice on.  Sadly, it's almost impossible to put out a actual illegal shot.  The only rule is that there is at least 3 units of oil on every board.  You can make a ton a variations of completely unplayable shots that are completely legal as long as they have 3 units on every board.
