'Matching up' with your equipment....
« on: March 23, 2009, 03:50:03 AM »
I often read bowlers do not 'match up' with certain balls.  I've a question concerning that statement.  If one has the proper information (i.e. PAP, etc.), doesn't that increase the probablity of the ball working as intended? Taking notice to RG, Diff, etc., do you base your ball purchase solely on those numbers?  In your mind, what combination works best for you?

Funny, years ago it really didn't matter to me just as long as the ball was round and fit good.  Are we ignorant, naive (or don't care) to the myth behind the equipment we use?

For me what stuff I throw does matter.  I track probably around 4 inches from the fingers and thumb hole.  Because of this, most balls tend to push down the lane a little bit farther than maybe they should.  Knowing this, I tend to prefer solids and hybrids that will roll a little  bit sooner than pearls.  They may not roll as soon for me as they do for others, but solids and hybrids tend to make the difference for me.  Since I started using them I don't leave but 2 or 3 ten pins a night, unlike the mass quantities of them I used to leave when I used mostly pearl stuff.  I still keep a couple of pearls around for when the lanes start sparking, but I prefer stuff that starts a little sooner.

I understand what you're saying.  I've noticed my style leans heavily towards pearl and hybrids as well.  I own very few solids.  Balls with cores closer to surface provide a different look.  Not saying I can't throw them, as all I do is make the necessary adjustments, but anything and everything polished works for me (must be an East Coast thing as here in NYC there appears to be an oil crisis!!!).  I can throw just about anything.  It may not match the condition and my comfort zone, but nonetheless, I can find a way to make it work.  Heck, I even throw plastic while everyone else throwing hook monsters!  Therefore, everthing 'can' work, but we tend to lean heavily on our strengths rather than deal with our weakness.

I think you might have mis-understood what I said.  I used to prefer pearls and balls that went long and flipped hard.  When they worked, they worked great, but I could also get into some serious trouble too.  That was before I began to understand that my style causes the ball to go longer than it should.  Since then I have switched to solids and have much more success with them.  They are much more controllable, I don't leave as many splits or 10 pins as I used to due to the ball pushing too far.

Its really all about finding out what matches up to your style of play...what feels comfortable to you.  If its pearl or snappy balls, then use those.  If its Hybrids, use those, if its solids, use those.  Since I put solids in my bag, I have been much more comfortable.  Its allowing me to work on my timing and release to get those more consistant and finally get me to the point where I feel I can average 220.

Why is it when I finished reading some of the replies/postings....I felt like I was in Ricks garage, listening to professors discussing a novel they have read a hundred times over..yet every word uttered is fresh to the mind and images of bowling balls fill the room.  The smell of Virginia slims in the air and an empty refrigerator that gives contrast to the space...ahhh it's spring!

I believe my balls are proportionate to my body.. wait..

OH! Actually, it's not a certain group of balls that I don't match up with. I don't match up with certain companies. Brunswick is to 'rolly', Visionary doesn't hit too well, and Ebonite, well, they just suck.

Now, these are all opinions. Bowlers have their different style, and with the uniqueness of today's equipment, not everybody is going to match up to everything based on as many variables as there are. I believe that's a good reason why a lot of people own so many different kinds of bowling bals.
