Pro Shop owners/workers - Need your help!
« on: August 19, 2008, 01:47:50 PM »
Hi all,

I started working on a little project, and I need your help.  I'm writing some software for Proshop management.  It started out as a small project for a local Proshop guy, but I started thinking about improvements I could make.  The thing is, I've never worked in a Proshop, so I'm curious as to what functionality people would like to see in this type of software.  How many people use software to manage their Proshop?  What would the ideal Proshop software do for you?

I'm just 1 guy doing this in my spare time, so I don't anticipate getting everything into it in version 1.0, but I'm looking for ideas.  Some of the basic functionality I've been working on is bowler contact info, bowler sales info, and drill specs for each ball purchased by the bowler.

Thanks in advance for all of your suggestions!

How about adding a pro shop inventory function?

The Pro Shop Coordinator is pretty nice, but probably a little more than I want to do right now.  I am thinking along the lines of something similar to the DrillSpec Coordinator.

It seems that a lot of Pro Shops I visit (at least in my area in MA) still use paper for keeping drill specs.  Is there something that keeps Pro Shop owners from switching to electronic record keeping?

Thanks for your suggestions!

If you don't see those operators using a computer, most likely they don't know how to use a computer, meaning no POS software, no drill spec software, no email address, most likely they don't do oval thumb, and they hate internet balls.

My advise is make a drill spec software that can integrate with either Quickbook POS or Microsoft POS, which can share the same database as far as contacts info.

Another issue would appear to be the amount of time and effort to convert legacy paper files into electronic form (i.e., data entry, verification, etc.).

I agree with minimum bob.  If said pro shop is fairly busy to a point where you have to work past cosing time just to catch up on plug work, the time to enter drill sheets into the computer may be slim to none.  Plus, as an operator is taking a measurement down from a customer, it is WAY easier to write it on a drill sheet than keep a keyboard handy and having to tab around to specific fields to enter the measurements.  Easier to write it down, keep it on file at the shop, and then transfer over to electronic form during a slow period.

I would agree with the last two posts.  We used to use a software package from, I think, Jawhawk.  Could be wrong on that.  It was easy to use, however the time factor was the issue.  There was never enough to catch up with the input on the paperwork.
