« on: May 19, 2005, 12:45:10 PM »
i did something retarded and my thumb has swollen up a bit and i have a blister on the side of the joint. is there really any quick way to fix this? to get rid of the blister without popping it and dealing with the mess?

I don't know of any way to get rid of blisters without popping them.  I think if you don't pop them they can get infected and turn into wart/callous type things.

Rest/leaving it alone is probably the only fix w/o popping. I do know Nolan Ryan used to soak blisters in pickle juice. Moises Alou soaked his in urine. Seriously. I'm not sure if they popped them before doing it though. As for bowling, when I had blister problems, and they were bad, I would pop them then throw some Robbies skin patch on them. Can't say I miss that stuff. Feel the burn, baby!!!!!

When I was a kid, working on the farm, and I'd have a blister from whatever, my mother would make me use a potato like posted above. I never knew why, didn't ask, just did. It helped the blister , not sure why...can't say. Sounds really strange, but it worked .

Can't say it'll work for you, but thinking back, it worked then. Can't hurt you, might be worth a try.

Good Luck !

I do this quite frequently on long tourney weekends.  take a potato. hollow out the middle so you can put your thumb/ finger in it like it is a thumb slug.  Leave on for a couple hours.  The starches in the potatoes will make the swelling go down.  It does also work on blisters, just not as well.  But for swelling there is no better trick.

The Potato trick works on two fronts actually.  Like maughany said, the Starch dries out the blister and toughens the skin a bit.  What he left out was that there is a good concentration of Vitamin E in potatoes.  Vitamin E is what you often take for acne because it promotes healthy skin growth.
