Title: thumb callous
Post by: john bussey on June 05, 2014, 12:22:42 PM
I just got back into the game after 40 plus years away.  I used to have a callous on the inside right of my thumb (I am right handed).  The callous has returned, and is very annoying.  Is this a thumb pitch problem, or is there some other cause that I can address?  I have been bowling for a little over a year, and am getting better, but this callous is taking away from my enjoyment.  Any ideas? :'(

You get those from rubbing there inside the thumb hole.  It could be pitch, span, size of the hole, or all of the above.

You need to see a pro shop guy that can look at it all and make the proper adjustments.

I have a very flat thumb, and get callouses on both sides of my thumb. To some extent, I think that it is natural for the skin to build up in areas where there is repeated contact/friction.

Blisters are different. I think they indicate problems with fit.

It's is either pitch, size, or you're squeezing.

The most common cause of thumb calluses is a bending the thumb (knuckling) in the hole in order to get a grip on the ball. This is usually  caused by a thumb hole that is too large.  It could also be caused by improper pitch, but mostly by too large a hole.
