I noticed on TV that some of the pro are able to get their thumbhole tight so they dont have to grip it. When they put their thumb in the hole they are still able to get it out of the ball easily when having to make tape adjustments. I like to have my thumbhole really snug too, but when I try to do tape adjustments I dont seem to be able to pull my thumb outta the ball as easily. I have to like really tug my fingers out of grips to get my thumb to come out. Is this normal? is my span too long? whats going on? any help would be fine

Hey Ryan,

 

You should ask Dave Bowles about that next time you are in town. Sounds like you could use a different pitch on the thumbhole. I forget who runs the proshop @ Landpark, but they should be able to help with it as well.

 

I have my thumb very tight and have no problem with my release I would say the amount of pressure I use to grip the ball would be about the amount needed to squeeze toothpaste from a tube.

I have no problem with my release, but when i put my fingers and thumb in to see if it feels right, thats when i cant get my thumb out without pulling my fingers out first

Ah, ok. Mine is the same way. If I hold the ball with my hand on top of the ball(fingers and thumb both straight down) it will hang on my hand with no pressure at all. If you roll the ball off your hand it should release easy. Sounds like your fit is just right if it doesn't interfere with your release.

It's span problem as your span is too long.

thanks! Yea I kinda figured span was too long, but it just felt comfortable and I didnt have to grip it at all

You can shorten to a more proper span and then adjust the pitches to be able to hold onto it better.

I like my thumb holes really tight.  Many times after I put my fingers/thumb in the ball and I have to stop for some reason, I have to put the ball down on the ball return and take my fingers out first, then my thumb.  I use rosin too.
 
Your span could be too long, maybe not.  The shape of your thumb hole may lock you in the ball too.  Your thumb pitch may be too much forward, but I probably wouldn't change that if you can release the ball cleanly.

yeah, I release the ball clean, its when I have to put the ball down after inserting my thumb and fingers...

I find that having a tapered thumbhole allows me to have a really snug thumb fit but allows me to get out of the ball clean.

 

My thumb will be pretty tight when fully inserted but as it comes out about an inch the wider top allows the ball to release clean at the release.
