thumb hole sticking
« on: July 24, 2003, 01:10:40 AM »
Hopefully someone can help me out, a friend gave me a black buzzsaw/c. I had the thumbhole plugged, and I am having a problem with my thumb sticking. When my driller drilled it, he didn't use a slug because he said he was drilling into the plug so there shouldn't be a problem. The thumbhole is drilled a little big, just like all of my balls, so I can use tape. However, my thumb will stick in the ball with no tape at all, and it's not tight. My thumb goes in very easily, but don't come out. Sometimes it does and I throw a great shot, and I really like this ball. My first thought was maybe I am gripping with my thumb, but that is not the case. Any time I grip the ball with my thumb I tear open the side of my thumb. So now my train of thought is that since it's a vinyl plug, maybe the humidity and any moisture is causing me to stick. Would putting a slug in there correct this? My thumb doesn't stick all the time, but most of the time it does, when it doesn't, I usually drop the ball and throw a bad shot. Thanks for any help.

Pitches are all ok, nothing wrong there. I seem to stick even more with tape in there, so I take the tape out to losen it, and it still sticks, even though the thumbhole is loose.

If pitches and spans are the same as smooth releasing balls then you have eliminated two variables.  If span is different and pitches the same then you haven't.

As to Vinyl vs Urethane, Urethane is much more slippery.  (I can't use it).
But if you are used to Urethane then you probably have a wet thumb and vinyl is instant hang city for you.

In addition your bevels must be right.  If a ball hangs and is pulled it is usually side bevel.  If a ball hangs and it is lofted or hurts the flat of your thumb one needs more front bevel.

I've posted a bit on "What Mo Pinel taught me about bevel" on drillings section.
(one might have to search quite a few days back.)(under preferences).

Steps,
1.  Verify all spans and pitches and sizes the same as smooth releasing balls.
2.  Verify bevel is the same on side and front as smooth releasing balls(I bet not).
3.  If none of above works replace vinyl with urethane slug and repeat 1 and 2.

Perfection.
