Title: Thumb in a potato myth!
Post by: rockerbowler18 on July 04, 2010, 12:29:56 PM
I've been told time and time again by a bunch of people (that don't all know each other) that when your thumb hurts, you should core out a potato and stick your thumb in it for about 10-15 minute intervals and that the next day it won't hurt.

Is there any truth to this? Has anyone tried it?

If so, what specifically does it do? (reduce pain? sensitivity? swelling?)

Just curious because my thumb hurts! :O

Be careful about that assumption. There's probably something to the idea that  it might help heal some surface cuts or blisters, but I doubt if it will do anything to cure tendon, bone, ligament or muscle problems. You're probably still a lot better of using Neosporin or aloe or vitamin E oil.

Doesn't reduce pain, at least not for me.  I have put my thumb in a potato and stuck that and my hand in a sock and slept with it to reduce swelling.  Works for that, but it makes your skin soft too.  Did that in the late 80's.  Grip is drilled better now, king of tape!

It works for cuts/blisters.  The starch dries out the skin, the high Vitamin E content heals it.  If you've actually hurt your thumb (muscle or tendon) then no, a potato will do nothing.

it's nothing like a bone or muscle or tendon...but there are no open sores either. It's just soreness from rubbing on the callous all weekend long (18 games).

Thanks for the tips!

It works REALLY well for swelled thumbs.  If your thumbs swells, just cut a hole in a raw potato, stick your thumb in for two minutes and bingo, the swelling has gone down!

Mark Roth frequently used the thumb in the potato because of damage to the skin.  He was shown using it a number of times on the TV show.  Mark''''s thumb used to look like it had been through a meat grinder.

This line from the above makes me wonder about its truthfulness:

"The potassium in the potato is strongly alkaline, which makes for good liver activation, elastic tissues, and supple muscles. It also produces body grace and a good disposition."

I didn't know that potassium produces "body grace".

Until I had a ball drilled that fit me, I used to use a potato all the time! Carried one with me when I was on the road in college.

when the skin gets rubbed, raw, blistered, etc - works wonders!

so it's pretty much saying if you have hemorrhoids, just to stick a potato up your arse?

[CHORUS]
In your butt
Put the boogie in your butt
Put, put the boogie in your butt
In your butt
Put the boogie in your butt
Put, put the boogie in your butt

I ain't puttin no boogie in nobody's butt
That's nasty, man
What you talkin about
Puttin boogie in people's butt
Are you out yo mind or something?
Could go to jail for doin something like that

Well step aside my friend
I been doing it for years
I say, sit on down, open your eyes
And open up your ears
Say, put a tree in your butt
Put a, a bumblebee in your butt
Put a clock in your butt
Put a big rock in your butt
Say, put some fleas in your butt
Say, start to sneeze in your butt
Say, put a tin can in your butt
Put a little tiny man in your butt
Say, put a light in your butt
Say, make it bright in your butt
Say, put a TV in your butt
Say, put me in your butt
Everybody say

[CHORUS]

I, hey, that's, man, I ain't putting no trees in nobody's butt,
no bees in nobody's butt, putting nothing--
You must be out your mind, man,
y'all get paid for doing this?
Cause y'all gotta get some kind of money
Cause this don't sound like the kind of--
I'd rather golf, to be perfectly honest,
than put somethin in somebody's butt
to be truthful

Well step aside my friend and let me
show you how you do it
When big bad E just rock rock to it
Put a case in your butt
Say, put a metal case in your butt
Say, put her face in your butt
Say, put a frown in your butt
Say, put a clown in your butt
Say, sit on down in your butt
Say, put a boat in your butt
Say, put a moat in your butt
Put a mink coat in your butt
Put everything in your butt
Just start to sing about your butt
Feels real good
When you sing about your butt, sing

[CHORUS]

[CHORUS]

Now wait a second, now,
Do y'all get paid for this, for doing this?

Well, Eddie says to put a lot of things in your butt, but I don't see a potato on the list!

First time I heard of this one was in the movie Dreamer. They had him do this after bowling a tournament. Classic bowling movie. Impossible to find a copy though.
