WIBC Nationals & National Bowling Stadium
« on: June 21, 2003, 10:58:11 AM »
I just returned from Reno and an incredible experience.  Upon walking off the plane at Reno/Taho International Airport one of the first sights was a huge banner welcoming WIBC Bowlers.  It may sound corny, but it made me feel special.

Every Hotel/Casino had welcome banners.  The stadium itself was awesome!  You walk in the lobby and go up the escalator to the lanes.  70 beautifully shining lanes.  Take a flight of stairs to the stadium seating and the view is even more impressive.  Talk about diamond vision at the baseball stadium, well they have the same type of thing over each pair of lanes.  There's no way to fib about your bowling, everyone can see your frame by frame score

Check in was a breeze then off to the squad room.  Mind you, unlike CA State you don't take your equipment with you.  That is left at the lanes.  Yes we did "march" in, but the music was cool.  The entrance of participants is shown over the bowler vision for lack of a better name.

The approaches and lanes are nice and clean as is the whole stadium.  While I wasn't bowling with any BR members, it was a great group of people.  The bowling was great, much better than CA State last weekend

If you ever get the chance to bowl at the National Bowling Stadium, go for it.  What a fantastic experience.  I am currently trying to get a team or two together for next year's ABC Nationals.

Really?  At the ABC Nationals, you have to check your equipment in before you enter the squad area with your equipment.  Then, you march behind the pinsetters to midway and enter the lane area from there with your equipment.  I just thought that the WIBC would be similar.

When you go to the ABCs, you might want to have a bag or bags with wheels.  It's a long walk if you have to carry four bowling balls.

Yep, the Stadium and Reno itself are both fun places to visit.  I've bowled in the Stadium at the ABC Nats in '95, and the Mixed Nats in '96, and I've been chomping at the bit to get back to Reno.  I was scheduled to go in '98, but surgery sidelined me from the ABC Nats that year.

If you get back to Reno next year, the Reno Hilton (out near the airport) has a 50 lane bowling center right in the hotel building.....they used to have regular Tour stops at the Hilton before the Stadium was opened.  You can catch the shuttle bus from the Hilton to the Stadium, and the city busses run between the Hilton and the Stadium too (the bus terminal is right across the street from the Stadium).  Also, if you have any extra time, check out Virginia City, about 45 minutes south of Reno.  If you don't want to drive, Gray Line Bus Tours has a day trip all the way around Lake Tahoe, including a 2 hour stop in Virginia City.

Yep, Reno is a fun trip to make.

Wow 70 lanes. The place must be awsome. It must
have a fantastic atmosphere when all the lanes
are in use. Down here in western australia we
have several centres with 24 lanes. That's as
large as we go.

WIBC reserves the right to check all equipment.  We had to complete a ball card listing all equipment brought in to the stadium.  I heard if you shoot a score over 275 they will pull the ball and check it more closely.

CA State (ABC Sanctioned) we had to walk in carrying the 2 balls we took to the lanes and the other 2 were in the ball/bag room.  A journey too far to make during doubles and singles

Depending on when we go, I'd like to spend more time in the area.  It has been about 20 years since I've been to Lake Tahoe and I've heard it has changed.  I didn't know I was going to Nationals until about 2 weeks ago, so I didn't really plan a vacation.  I just wanted to get there and have a place to stay  One of the locals told me they have to bowl at the Hilton.  She said it is nice, but would like to bowl at the stadium without having to bowl in a big tournament.

Hammerfan, what CB didn't tell you is that the lanes are upstairs in the building.  The Stadium and attached parking deck covers a city block in the middle of downtown Reno, and the Casino Row is just a short block away.  In fact, most (not all, but most) of the Reno casinos are within walking distance of the Stadium.  Plus, the building is located at 300 Center Street.  It's definitely a neat place, with theater style seating above the first 40 lanes or so.

Since you're from Australia, one thing that you might notice is the altitude at Reno.  Even though the city is down in a bowl (ringed by mountains all the way around), it is still some 4500 feet above sea level....you can tell that the air is thinner there.  When you get up in the Sierra Mountains on the west side of town (actually along the west side of Lake Tahoe), you get up to about 7200 feet above sea level in places.

FYI - the stadium is 78 lanes. It was originally supposed to be 80, but the architect (who is NOT a bowler) screwed up. When the plans were drawn up, he offered to make each lane 1" or so narrower, so that they could fit in the last two lanes. And that great statue - in the lobby - cost the Reno taxpayer $100K. Lots of scandal associated with that place.

The Tahoe-Truckee area is the place I call home. Truckee is 35 miles west of Reno on I-80, and is 12 miles north of north Tahoe. That whole area is one of the most spectacularly beautiful areas in the WORLD!! We just left there yesterday. Once I get them developed, I'll post some photos to my website for everyone's pleasure.

And - bowling WIBCs this year was much more pleasurable than the last time - 6 years ago in Reno. This time I didn't have to check "all that" equipment, and the stadium/tournament staff really knew the scoop!

It was a blast. And the local casinos were doing their best to attract the bowlers - 6 years ago during convention week, cab fares went up 20%, hotel rooms doubled, etc. This year, the area finally realized it counted more on bowling that it thought - and was definitely treating the bowlers right. Lots of special offers if you show your WIBC card, shuttles all over, with drivers that unloaded bowling balls(!!!) - AWESOME.

If you're visiting that area, feel free to ask for recommendations. We stayed at the Atlantis this trip - although we got a good rate, and the casino and restaurants are fine, we had some problems with the hotel, and when we commented/complained they would do nothing.

Mumzie, I always wondered what happened to lanes 79 and 80.  I recall all of the big hype before the Stadium opened, and it was claimed to be an 80 lane house.  Then, when I got there for the '95 ABC Nats, I only found 78 lanes out on the floor, and of course lane 79 up in the Pro Shop.  I had always wondered where the other 2 lanes had disappeared to during the construction phase, but I never knew the inside scoop.

Yep, I seem to recall that the original price tag was supposed to be $30 million to build the Stadium, and I seem to recall that the costs ran over $35 million to finish up what they did (without completing part of the upstairs area of the building).  The city of Reno funded the project, with the citizens expecting to recoup the investment within a 15 year period (through profits from the bowling tournaments and tourism).  And in recent years, the "full time" use of the building has been in some question, since it sits idle during a significant part of each year.  I know that there has been talk of putting in temporary flooring above the lane beds for concerts, etc., but I don't think that any of that has happened as of yet.  The original contract between the Stadium and the ABC/WIBC was for 15 years, and I believe that the ABC is willing to extend their committment beyond that period (since they get the biggest turnout for the ABC Nats when it is held in Reno).  Yep, the future of the Stadium is somewhat uncertain at this point.....I hope that they continue to utilize it for what it was initially designed for, and that's bowling tournaments.

I'm not sure if it would be feasible to open up the Stadium for league competition or not.  With the costs to operate such a large facility, it might cost more to run than the league revenues would bring in.  And, league bowling at the Stadium would put the hurt on other local houses such as the Reno Hilton Lanes.  In fact, the Hilton used to host quite a few tournaments before the Stadium opened up in '95, but I can't think of many (or any) bowled there since the Stadium went into business.
