Thumb issues
« on: January 12, 2010, 07:25:14 AM »
Let me start off by saying that previously I was a 210avg bowler who stayed between the Hammer and Storm lines.  I am lefty, throw between 15/16 mph and while I never had my rev rate checked, I "used to have medium/medium high revs.

Last year I purchased the Cell Pearl after my previous bowling balls were stolen at the bowling alley.  This ball completely ruined my game.  Ever since I purchased the ball, I have been having major issues w/ my thumb swelling and with inconsistent releases.  I am constantly fooling around with tape and powder to try to establish the release I used to get w/ my other balls.   I have also been to the proshop numberous times to enlarge my thumbhole which probably did more harm than good.  My average has plummeted to 177.  I turned into a complete headcase over this thumb issue that I know it has now carried over into other parts of my game.

I am looking to pick up the Storm Reign or the Storm Reign of Fire when I decide on if I want another pearl or a solid.  What questions/demands can I give the proshop driller to ensure I get a proper feel.  Sometime between my previous drilling to the Cell Pearl and my drilling for the Cell Pearl, the proshop owner lost my drill sheet, so I am obviously going to have him remeasure everything and hope that there was something wrong w/ my finger pitches and/or span.  Considering I've never drilled a ball, I really do not know what to look for to make sure I get a release I am comfortable with.  I also am unaware of other variables that may be causing this problem.   All I know is that it entirely ruined my game.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Your advising me to get this ball plugged and redrilled?  I can't seem to get the thumb right by constant shaving down the thumb.

If you have other drillers in the area I would have them check out the pitch in your thumb.. or have the original driller check it..
maybe he put lateral pitch in for a right hander by mistake..

I had a lot of problems with my thumb went I bought my 2nd dimension, what felt good at the time of drilling was defiantly not the right fit as the ball would pretty much slip outta my hand. I went to the Proshop owner and he asked if my thumb swelled or shrank when bowling and I did not know, never really thought about that before, but we ended up changing the thumb slug 3 times and ended up with I believe 56/57 for a thumb slug, so I would try a range of thumb slugs and maybe some grip tape just in case. Best of luck.

The ball itself would not cause thumb problems, only the fit of the drilling on that ball.

I would experiment with your current ball, or another used ball until I got a thumb that felt correct. I wouldn't want to experiment with a new ball.

Assuming you didn't have thumb issues with your old equipment, you should be able to achieve that same feel.

Without seeing the drill and your hand it would be impossible to say. Primary culprits would be the thumb pitch and/or the span.

In a ball with the wrong thumb pitch you can sand the hole way too big but still beat your thumb up. Plus you will have to grip the ball to keep it from falling off.

A ball drilled with the correct thumb pitch, spans, and hole sizes will come off automatically at the correct point for your release, no thought should be required, no changes to your swing needed.

Yeah I definately agree on the pitch issue.  I am going to have to find another driller I think.  I am definately not comfortable and it would be a cold day in hell before my driller said I'll throw another thumb slug in and redrill it.

Anyone know a good driller in New Jersey?

Go to the shop that drilled your equipment that was stolen.  They should have your drill sheets in a file or on computer.  Either have your Cell Pearl corrected to your old specs or have a new ball drilled that way.  --  JohnP

It was the same guy that did my new equipment.  He conveniently lost it somehow.

He's not very professional, if you stick with him ask him for a copy of your drill sheet when he finally gets it right and keep it on file yourself.  --  JohnP

I use a thumb slug.  My thumbhole is definately ovaled, but id be surprised if any turning is going before my thumb is out of the ball.

I suffer from thumb swelling but ive found a few solutions that have worked for me.

first thing to make sure you have right:

thumb pitch

thumb hole size (duh) i like to be able to add tape

AND thumb hole shape (for me I had to have my driller oval the back of the thumb hole so I could clear it and that made a HUGE difference) -> another words... you may need to experiment. I kept getting stuck in the ball after every ball was drilled, that right there is a sign that something wasnt right in the fit. I explained this to my driller and he started shaving off the back of my thumb hole. I said "what are you doing!?" I never saw anyone have that done.

so you never know what might help till you ask!

also when I bowl my hand swells up quickly. so what i do is keep my arm up or down (above or below my heart) if my hand is fitting REALLY tight then ill keep my hand up until the swelling goes down and im good to go. might sound weird but hey, it works for me!

BBock,

I had a ball drilled at Rockaway lanes about 7 years ago.  just one ball.  I live in California.  Went back five years later to visit my Sister iin Denville, stopped at Rockaway and the pro shop and he bought up my drill specs on his computer in seconds.  Don't know if the pro shop at Rockaway changed hands, but they were very professional in recnet years.

You can send an email to Ron Clifton.  He can tell you a good way to see if your thumb pitches are correct.
