Thumb-IT not Flush. Installation ?
« on: July 09, 2016, 08:35:20 PM »
I drilled up two new balls this morning.  Both I installed Vise - IT thumbs.  One went in perfect, no issues, the thumb turns easily and is flush with the surface of the ball (same as the previous three I had installed).  On my second ball this morning, it appeared as through the core material swelled a little bit after drilling the 1 5/16" hole as the bottom was tight.  Running my finger along the inside, I could feel a "bulge.". I took my bevel sander and ran up and down the thumb several times until it smoothed out.  Still a slight bulge from the core, but the installation tool would spin 90% free (still a bit of resistance, but not bad).  I made sure the main and the small holes were cleaned out and installed the Ball-IT piece.
When I checked this one, about 1/16" of the inner slug is above the surface of the ball on the edge.  The slug will also move about another 1 /32" up and down.

Seems like somehow I didn't get the Ball-IT completely seated properly.  Has anyone had this issue before?  I don't think that I did anything differently.

The only real difference was the core bulge.  Has anyone seen this before?

The big question is how to recover from this?  I guess drill out the Ball-IT and plug the bottom of the hole?  Is there any way to save some of the pieces, or is it a lost cause?

Thanks
Scott

I use to get that same bulge once in awhile when I started drilling for IT's,then I decided to step drill them all. I use 2 bits of different sizes before I finish with the desired IT size. That got rid of that problem. I think your other issue is due to not getting the ball IT all the way down at the bottom or you missed the correct depth by a pinch when drilling

Also there's no way to save the ball IT,just drill it out and pull ball up 1/2" and call it a day
