Suggestions for bowling ball reviews
« on: July 09, 2016, 09:40:03 PM »
Ok, I am gonna start doing my own bowling ball reviews. Im not on staff with any company so my reviews are gonna be as honest as pasible.

I am a low, medium rev guy (300) with average speed (16.5) so some people like me would be able to relate on how I throw the shot compared to all the great bowlers with high speed and high rev rate that can make any ball look great from everywhere lol...

What do you want to see? I am planning on:

- Using the ball on a house shot and on a sport pattern.
- Comparing the ball with some others from the same company throwing different lines so people can see the difference
- writng key points regarding the ball (strenghts, how strong, touchy, etc it is)

Any other things you want to see? Any help would be truly appreciated!

I'd suggest list your bowling stats. and know that they are correct and not a guesstimate.  Ball speed noted if off hand or at backend,  tilt, axis rotation, rpms, PAP, etal.  Ball surface and layout.  Lane condition if house length and volume and is sport name etc. how old the surface/lane topography is if known.

Truth be told from what you have listed in your OP you are more average and more bowlers could relate to your reviews than the majority of uber speed uber rev players who 10% or less might be able to relate to.  Good luck on your review endeavor!

For written review:
Use a Ball Review Template so your reviews are consistent

1) Company and Ball Name

2) Ball Specifications
a) Gross Weight
b) Top Weight
c) Pin to CG measurement
d) Coverstock Type
e) Particle,Reactive,Urethane,Polyester, Solid, Hybrid or Pearl.
f) Core name, Low RG, High RG, Differential, Intermediate Differential if applicable

3) Drill Layout/Pattern
a) Pin to PAP distance
b) CG to PAP distance
c) Extra Hole Placement (if used)
d) Mass Bias Placement
e) Dual Angle Layout or Pin Buffer Layout used
f) Company Drill Sheet Layout Number (if used)
g) Ball Photo and/or Video link (if available)
h) This really helps if layout information is not known.

4) Surface Preparation
a) Surface Type: Sanded, Matte, Polished
b) Grit and/or Polishes used

5) Bowler Specifications
a) Right or Left handed
b) Ball Speed
c) Rev rate
d) Axis Tilt
e) Axis of rotation used in this performance
f) Positive Axis Point (PAP)
g) If not known use high track, low track, full roller, 3/4 roller or spinner.

6) Lanes
a) Type of lanes (synthetic, wooden, guardian surface etc.)
b) Oil pattern Length
c) Oil pattern Information (Typical House Shot “THS”, Sport, PBA etc.)

7) Ball Reaction Characteristics
a) Length
b) Mid-lane read
c) Break point
d) Backend (arcing, angular, controlled)

8) Miscellaneous Information
a) League type or open play, Lane play used, comparison to other balls used etc.

9) Summary
a) Your comments, likes, dislikes etc.

If doing a video

a) Show the ball being used by different style bowler's.

b) Don't show just strikes, include the misses so we can see how the ball reacts when you make a bad shot.

c) Include some of the above information

d) Don't use blaring loud background music.

If possible, try to compare to balls outside of brand also, even it is just a Storm ball compared to a Roto Grip ball. Either different types of balls to compliment each other or similar balls to compare differences. Also, on the lanes, consider making a surface change and taking videos of the changed reaction. I find that as useful as anything.

I agree with what's stated, and it illustrates why it's so hard for any individual (staffer or otherwise) to write a useful review. Outside magazine reviews performed in a controlled environment, with comparisons made to other balls, I personally find most conclusions lacking.

At an individual level, I find casual conversations here about equipment more useful than anything formal. That might sound weird, but I find it to be consistently true.

For a non-sponsored bowler, I think it would be plenty to try a ball on a couple of sport shots and state ball speed, revrate, ball layout, ball surface prep, lane surface details, and what the key impressions of the ball were.

At the end of the day, the most pertinent data points would be layout, ball speed, revrate, ball surface prep, and type of lane condition.  Show a few strikes, then show a few shots outside of intended target and few inside of intended target to show what happens if you "miss".  It gives an idea of how the ball reacted for that bowler and is fun to see.

The only time I have ever known the actual lane condition is when bowling sport events where they disclose the pattern.  Otherwise, bowlers usually walk in blind to the type of house pattern and lane surface.  You can ask some of the "locals" and they will either give you 3 different answers or flat out not know.  Most bowlers walk in, throw a few shots with their benchmark ball, and then adjust off of that.

Ball review videos are fun to watch, but for the most part useless unless you happen to find yourself at the same center on the same pair, with the same condition, using the same model ball and surface, and have the same specs as the test bowler.  Outside of that, ball review videos are pure entertainment.  I greatly appreciate the people that post them and take the time to produce them, and I watch several videos each week as they are uploaded, but don't really use them anymore to make ball purchase decisions.  There are too many balls on the market as it is, and I have initiated my own personal boycott of getting new equipment until I absolutely NEED a new ball.

What? No stool sample needed?

Please, why would anyone go through the time and effort to do all this BS for a review when they are not being compensated for the work? Not to mention that 95% of the users here don't know half of what all these different variables mean anyway.

For a reasonable review here, all we need is how well the ball works for the individual doing the review. Leave out the manufacturers marketing propaganda and give us a true opinion.

If just a simple opinion on how well the ball works for you doesn't satisfy the nitpickers here, then they can buy the damn ball themselves and do all the work.

If you want to and have the ability to try it on a couple of different patterns, by all means, we would like to hear it. If you have experience with other balls and want to make a comparison, then feel free to include that information as you see it.

But that's just my opinion.  ;D

Why, maybe just because they want to be thorough and want to.

One of the biggest things with reviews is people always windup asking for more information or saying you didn't tell us this or that.

While the list looks long it's not that much and it's not manufacturers marketing propaganda.

If they want to do that then more power to them. It just seems that recently we(as a group of BR members) are getting more and more critical of these reviews by non-staffers. I've looked back at the older reviews and very few of them give the kind of details that are being ask for on balls. But it's demanded today? Makes no sense to me.

The other issue is that the folks here that are the most critical are not the ones doing the reviews, they just throw stones at everyone else.

For me, I take reviews by staffers with a grain of salt, knowing that they are selling a product.  I like real world, unbiased reviews, even if they are not covering every single aspect of a ball.

I think one of the issues is members here cannot respond to them.  I get more information about a ball from someone asking questions in the forums instead of giving a paragraph in the review section.
