Darned if you do, Darned if you don't
« on: November 28, 2004, 11:43:34 PM »
I was talking with one of PBA exempt players this last week. He stated in the past he had a situation where he had swept his first two matches 4 – 0. In the next match he got caught up in a tight match and went to extra games. Since he hadn’t bowled on the lanes after 4 games he hadn’t experienced how they transitioned in games 5 and on and felt that his opponent had an advantage because his matches had both gone 6 games before. He finally won the match in 7 games.

While they always want to put their opponent away a quickly as possible and gladly take the 4 game sweeps there is a downside to sweeping a match.

I don’t think we give enough credit to the randomness of the breakdown.

They make educated guesses as to what would work but just like Wiseman on the show yesterday sometimes they are fooled.

If you have gone thru the breakdown before and learned that going to a particular ball on slightly different line gives you a good carrying reaction, then you have a leg up on a competitor who hasn’t gone thru it.

The best out there are good at making the adjustments and start striking again but depending on the breaks when you lose the reaction (getting splits vs makeable spares) losing those 20 or 30 pins means you lose 250 to 230. And by the 3rd or 4th round these are the guys who have had a good reaction thus far.

Another thing they stated was that each round the lanes will play a little differently. I thought this statement was interesting since the lanes are strip and oil before each block. But obviously there is some memory of the pattern left on the lanes. Their statement was that the lanes tend to get more early hook and less back end as the week progresses.

It was interesting to watch Wiseman's progression through that first match.  Peterson said how Wiseman considers himself to be a technician of the game, constantly tweaking balls and layouts.  While this shows his great knowledge, it also allows for his mind to start overanalyzing and he got caught up in the whole changing ball problem many leaguers are plagued with.

Its almost a case of, the more you know, the more you can fool yourself with.  You may know 8 ways to throw a strike, but unless you can settle on one, it will be thru the 8th frame before you can give each one a shot.

Whenever I get ready to change balls, I always feel like I am making the wrong decision.  Changing balls to me is more than just looking for a more or less agressive reaction, but I also factor in how the feel will be different, since it will be colder due to sitting idle and also if my mechanics will still be consistent to how I want the ball to react.  Say I was throwing my one ball just a bit harder to get it down the lane further and changed to a less aggressive ball.  Now if I throw that ball the same way as my last one, it will skid too far down the lane.  Man I love this game on days when it's tough

D <~~~~ Used to be terrible wiffing 10 pins.  Now through much practice, can wiff any single pin spare at any time.

What seemed unfair to me about this event was, when all is said and done, it was not bowling skill that made the difference. I was again about "matching up" with equipement and the only player that had a chance and made them look easy was the player that had the most rev's. Where is the fairness in this?

Should not bowling be about the skill of "bowling" and everybody have the same ability to score? That certianly was NOT the case in this event.

Unfortunately all conditions are about matching up. Some conditions simply let a wider range of styles match up than others.

A handful of guys on tour can match up reasonably well to virtually any condition, but even they will have favorites.

When virtually all bowlers are now learning on THS conditions how do some happen to develop a style that allows them to hit these certain shots? I believe some of it is simply due to individual body types and personalities.
