Walter Ray Williams Jr. earned his 5th career ESPY award for “Best Bowler†Wednesday night at the 2005 ESPY Awards at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, Calif.
Williams, who also won the award in 1998, 1999, 2001 and 2003, won his 40th career title in 2004-05, becoming just the second bowler in PBA history to win at least 40 titles. He heads into the 2005-06 season just one win shy of tying Earl Anthony’s all-time record of 41 career titles.
Besides winning his 40th career title, Williams also finished last season 4th in the 2004-05 PBA World Point Rankings. He won the George Young Memorial High Average award for the sixth time in his career, leading the PBA Tour with a 227.07 average, the second-highest of all-time.
Also nominated for the ESPY’s “Best Bowler†award, as chosen by ESPN, were Patrick Allen, Chris Barnes, Mika Koivuniemi and Liz Johnson. This year marked the second consecutive year that the fans’ vote decided the outcome of the ESPY Awards.
The 2005 ESPY Awards will air Sunday, July 17 on ESPN at 9 p.m. ET.
Not sure how people could vote for him over PA or Barnes but whatever.
