League lineup
« on: August 12, 2014, 08:15:09 AM »
Just had a quick question as far as how to set a lineup for league for a 4 man team? The averages are 168, 182, 198, and 206 (averages pulled out of air). Also would like to know what was the reason you put that person/average in a particular position in the lineup.

The Leadoff would be a person who the rest of a team could get a really good read off of lane condition wise and was ultra consistent.

2 Place would be either a lefty with the same quality or a guy who was for lack of a better term the weak link.

3 Would be a guy who could make sure to put together a strong game and set things up for the anchor bowler. Also must be a good spare shooter.

4 The most consistent and talented player who could make shots under pressure and also read what the other guys are doing and make quick adjustments.

Just guessing with your numbers of 168, 182, 198, and 206 that would be.

1-182
2-168 (weak Link)
3-198
4-206 (anchor)

For a 5 man team:
1-2-3 Same as above
4 would be the second strongest bowler and a bowler who could really put up some numbers. Great spare shooter an and clutch bowler for the 9th frame.

5 The most consistent and talented player who could make shots under pressure and also read what the other guys are doing and make quick adjustments.

Thanks Aloarjr810, I was thinking along the same lines but wanted to make sure.

Aloarjr810 pretty much nailed it. Only thing I would add is sometimes I like having the most charismatic guy at lead off to pump up the team but he should definitely be a person you can get a good read off as well.

I think Aloarjr810 hit the nail on the head with his descriptions of each position. The only thing I would add is you really need to look more at the people then the averages. The anchor bowler need to have the right make up, sort of like a closer in baseball. They have to want to ball in their hands at the end of the game. They have to be able to deal with the pressure of throwing the last frame with a game on the line. And, maybe even more important, they have to have a short memory and quickly forget about the times where they don't come through, as they may needed again the very next game.

I think that the last two bowlers should be the ones that handle pressure best. Often, the game comes down to the last two frames. Your three bowler needs to be able to handle having to make the shots when needed to give the anchor a chance.

Agree on positions and strengths of bowlers but most hdcp recreational type teams don't have all the slots filled because of skill level of bowlers on team.  The same bolwer in anchor could be #4 or #5.  #2 every team has one.  #1 and #3/#4 are the hardest to fill.

I have had the discussion with others as far as the anchor. Mostly I always hear the highest average should be the anchor, but I always say they may not be the best under pressure. Last year we had a guy on the team who carried about 15-20 sticks above the rest of us, but he bowled better as leadoff than anchor.

If you have two bowlers with same average or close say one is 215 and one 217.  The #4 should be the highest average and the best under pressure to roll strikes is #5.  BUT, the issue is many times they are one in the same bowler.

Honestly I don't think it matters too much if you are not moving pairs.  Just put the guy most likely to throw a quality shot to win anchor.

The only thing I would add to this is make sure your lead off bowler wants to bowl lead off. We tried this and the guy didn't want to bowl there and he game went to crap.
