Thumb Problem
« on: August 04, 2008, 11:46:21 PM »
A little background information first.   I use turbo thumb tape (purple or green) and have 3 pieces of tape in my thumbhole.  The other night we had a local tournament with tons of people watching.  It was very humid. I could not get out of my thumbhole.  It would get stuck upon release which would cause me to spin the ball like a top.  My suspicion is that humidity was the problem as I could feel my hands were super sticky.  What I did to resolve this was take all the tape out of my thumbhole and take off my thumb tape.  Now my thumbhole was huge but at least I was able to get out of it.  Has anyone ever had this problem? and what did you do to resolve this?

I hate sticking in my thumbhole.  I always use a rosin puff ball to dry off my hands before each shot, wear the blue Vise Hada patch on the back of my thumb, and use slick black tape in my thumbhole (Frankentape from valentinobowling.com is my favorite).  Provided I keep my thumb snug and blow a little air in my thumb prior to each shot to keep it from being too slick, I almost never have problems with sticking OR dropping the ball.

Dan, you use the black tape in the thumb hole on the back side don't you?  In other words against the tape on the back of your thumb when inserted?  That is how I apply mine, but was wondering if you are doing something different.  I also tend to stick, but I also tend to grip to much.

I actually have gotten to the point where I use black tape around my entire thumbhole.  That's not very common, but it works for me.  It prevented wear-and-tear on my thumb when bowling 21 games in two and a half days in a tournament the other week at least!  As long as I keep the thumb snug, I don't have to grip the ball to hold onto it (I actually make it a point to keep my hand very open and loose).

Same here. The key is to have a snug thumbhole. The slick tape keeps your thumb from sticking, even when it feels really tight. If your thumbhole is lose, you will grab the ball. If my thumb has really gotten smaller, I use white tape as a backer (smooth on top of white).

i use black tape in the back.. (found out I needed smaller then 1" so I ordered a lot of 3/4")

then I wrap my entire thumb in green turbo tape. I buy the 2" size from buddies so its all one piece.

works for me

I have a lot of issues with my thumb swelling up and not being able to get out of the ball at all. I also have been getting blisters on the sides of my thumb. I'm debating whether or not to sand out my thumbhole almost to the next size and to oval it out with some tape, because I have an oval shaped thumb and that could take some of the pressure off the sides. For me, the problem is a combination of moist hands and a swollen thumb.

Here comes a "PLUG" for the VISE "IT". I would have this with 3 different size inserts and change to what feels good to accomodate the swelling-shrinking.
