Thumb Slug problem
« on: October 25, 2004, 05:38:19 AM »
My fellow bowling inthusiasts...How Goes it? I'm back to enlist in some more help from you knowledgable people. Here lies the problem:

I recently purchased a Track Hexplosion. This is the first ball I have ever used grips and a thumb slug in. I previously just had a fingertip drill. I threw a series with the ball and got 505 (average for me). The problem was the slug gives me quite a bit of irritation on my knuckle when I release the ball. This probably has something to do with the way that I release the ball. I've never had this problem before however, minus the slug. Should I attempt to alter my release, or is the slug perhaps a bit too tight and I should consider opening it up a little? (it doesn't stick or anything) Give me your input...especially you pro shop fellas.

If anything a slug should give you a better feel with your thumb.  I would have your driller double check the pitches to make sure there no differrent than when you didn't have a slug and if they are correct I would try opening it up slightly where it seems to be rubbing your thumb.  If the hole is slightly too big currently then you may be sqeezing slightly which would prevent you from coming out just right.  Some people like a loose feeling thumb but often get it too big and they have to grip it then you start bending their knuckle some and can't get a clean release.

I should just quit bowling, oh wait I already tried that.

Assuming the thumb pitches are the same, my guess is that the hole is a little too big and you are bending your thumb trying to hold onto the ball.

Slugs are often slicker than the cores of balls and you will knuckle to ball to hold on.

If so then try a piece or two of tape to tighten the hole up.
