Thumb Slug Removal
« on: December 03, 2005, 02:14:59 AM »
Is there any way to remove your thumb slug without destroying it?  I have 15 old balls that the slugs are just going to waste.  I have been trying to come up with something but so far have been unsuccessful.

I sense some sarcasm... Well one it is adhesive, it is a polymer, I have engineering experience in adhesive bonding of polymers I was just wondering if anyone else had an easy way to do it.  Adhesives dont have much shear strength and if there was a way to fit the slug and twist then you could break it free from the ball.  or if you could insert a thin gage shim that is also strong enough you could break the bond between the slug and the ball... So no I am not kidding I havent found anything to fit the slug nor have I found something strong enough to go into the hole between the slug and the ball... The hair dryer is a good thought I just dont know if thermal expansion or contraction would be significant enough to break the bond enough to be able to pull it out.  I might try that though.

THe reason that I may "waste" the time is because the slug is already drilled and It would be a simple take out put in new hole.  When places charge you 10 bucks to put one in and drill it this will be beneficial..

You can also get grips out well enough to use again so why not I say.

What does it matter?  If everyone wants to buy new slugs great.  I didnt ask if it would be beneficial to remove my slugs I just have 15 (exagerration) in balls already drilled and if I could switch them over that would be excellent.  Just wondering if anyone has done it before.

I have never heard of anyone doing this.. The slugs are glued in and almost impossible to remove and be re-usable..

CTE or coefficient of thermal expansion for vinyl is 27.8microin./in.*F
change in area = 2(CTE)*(Fo-Fi) so change in temperature multiplied by 2CTE will give you the change in area of the slug. The change in the ball will be about 56.1microin/in.*F so the ball will change in area almost by two times but at lets say 200F change in area of the slug with respect to the ball will be .007 inches.

This is what life is like when you are a nerd...

A tool called the Master Grip Grabber is made just for the purpose of removing sleeves and slugs, see the link below.  It works OK as long as just the top portion of the slug is glued.  Some drillers glue the entire length of the slug, making them almost impossible to remove.  You might try using a hammer to firmly tap the slug.  If it's not bottomed out in the hole, it might break loose.  But another problem is getting the removed slug to match up with the hole in another ball.  If the pitches and bevel aren't exactly the same, you'll have to trim the top even and then rebevel after it's used in another ball.  --  JohnP

that is more for grips and not slugs.. I have seen that tool and its not going to remove thumb slugs. Its not long enough. If there is any glue in the bottom part of the hole, you can forget it..

Exactly what is a slide hammer puller?  I may need one.  --  JohnP

Yes, the Grip Grabber is more for removing fingertip inserts.  I have one myself, and I really like it for making fingertip insert removal easy.  The Grip Grabber is a little bit pricey, but if you change out inserts frequently, they are worth the cost.

The tool used for removing finger grips is different than the one used for removing thumb sleeves and slugs.  The metal forming the one for thumbs is a lot thinner and fits a 1 1/8" diameter hole instead of 31/32".  I'll try to find a picture of a slide hammer puller on the web.  Thanks for the info.  --  JohnP
