Timing Question
« on: May 26, 2009, 12:43:48 PM »
Hey BR Folk and Folkettes,

Lately, I've been having a bit of a timing bug.  My ball speed is up about .75-1.0 MPH faster than where I want (according to house I shoot league at).  After some practice and analysis with a friend, I'm rushing my feet and it's throwing off my release.  Basically, my feet are faster than my hands.  How do you go about working on this to sync up everything again?

Here's a quick "timing" lesson by Fred Borden.

Good luck.

Delay you push-away in your armswing.  Try taking one step
before initiating your push away.....slow, slow.

good luck.

When my feet get too fast, it's because my first step has gotten too long, causing me to rush the line and making my timing inconsistent.  Try taking a very small first step, almost heel to toe or just slightly more.  I'm also holding the ball lower so that I don't have as big of a backswing, which helps in keeping my ball speed down so it matches up better with my revs.

Try walking heel-toe during your approach, it should slow down your feet.

Hey Folks, quick update.

I went to bowl a few games practice the other day.  I did two things: move up on the approach and worked on "following the ball."  I moved up maybe 6 inches tops on the approach, and I felt my body naturally slow down a bit.  Then I worked hard to not rush my feet, and have my feet follow the pendulum of the ball.  It took a game or two for me to get this closer approach down well, but when it did the ball was coming off my hand cleaner and it definitely read the lane a LOT better.

I'm going to work with a coach tomorrow to take some video so I can see myself and how I look (I've never done it).  But the hints on here have definitely helped, hopefully coach will see something and it'll be easy as pie to fix.

This is what happens to me.  When I know my timing has gotten off, 95% of the time its because of my first step.  It gets very long and exagarrated.  So after the first step I'm already ahead of myself and can get into a world of trouble.

All I do is just focus my last couple of thoughts on taking a nice, slow, short first step, and letting the rest of my steps and my body accelerate to the normal point.  For me, it works like a charm.  I don't know if this is what is causing your poor timing, but it wouldn't hurt to take a look.

Just curious, are you guys referring to the first step in a 4-step or 5-step approach?

Hey guys, an update again!  I got a video lesson done with my pro-shop operator, and we were looking at my approach from all angles.  Turns out I was using a gigantic first and second steps, which both ruined my timing and made me really really fast in general.  I've been focusing on a smaller first and second step then larger 3rd and 4th steps to help explode towards the foul line to have more momentum going into the ball and not my torso, lol.  But things have been already improving in consistency of speed and ball reaction.  I find my ball is reading the lane much better.  I appreciate all of your help on this, very much!  I'll be posting a new topic in a bit about drifting on the approach, so keep an eye out

Thanks again guys, a million thanks.

I'm using a 4 step approach.  And since I've started really concentrating on keeping my first step very short (about 2-3 months ago), I've raised my average from 185 to the upper 190s, with way more 200+ games than I used to get.  Currently averaging 199 in our spring league after 3 weeks, with 6 out of 9 games being over 200.  The short first step has been the key for me (so far).

I have noticed the EXACT same thing with me.  A shorter first step for me gets my arm and feet in great sync, and my games haven't dipped below 190, which is amazingly exciting for me.  I also have a clean game more often.

Glad to hear that things are improving for you.  I've also had several clean games since I improved my timing using a shorter first step.  Funny how sometimes something so simple can really make a difference.  Keep up the good bowling.
