thumb slugs
« on: December 06, 2004, 11:15:34 AM »
I was seeing that a lot of other bowlers are using thumb slugs and was wondering what advantage do the slugs provide. I am going to be buying a new ball in the next few weeks and was wondering wether it would be worth installing.

Hey there, for me it gives the same feel from ball to ball where as some balls feel different from company to company depending on there particular material used to make the ball.

Same feel from ball to ball if done correctly.  PLUS, it will feel less tacky than resin or particle.  Feels more like a plastic ball.

Thats exactly what a thumb slug is for. Also, some material used to make the balls gets tacky when warm, or even not warm, and you hang in the ball, this way you dont hang in the ball. For me, its a bit of both, so I have the same feeling from ball to ball, and so I dont hang up in it. Plus the nice thing about thumb slugs is if you mess it up, or want a different feel, you can drill it out and put a new one in instead of plugging the ball.

Same feeling from ball to ball.

Also - a way to move/resize a thumbhole quickly, if the span is close.

But mainly feel. I use exclusively urethane slugs. I mistakenly bought a few vinyl ones, and had them put into a couple of balls. OOPS. That was a big mistake.

NOW - slugs are different than the inserts. Inserts are presized, pre drilled. Slugs are drilled at the same time as the rest of the ball. I DON'T like inserts. They are awful - in my opinion.
