Ok i started a sport shot league 2day and theres one problem, Their not using PBA patterns and are not telling us what patterns is out there or any information about it.

I'm having a real hard time finding a line until like the 6 frame of the last game. Any suggestion about how i should paly these lanes just to find a line?

if it is a sport shot and you paid extra for your USBC sport card
ask your league secy unless it is not a certified sport league.

don't let the center do you !

What would you have done in the age before computers and oil graphs?

Typically Sport leagues use higher volumes of oil and force you to play straighter or tighter inside due to the lack of "bump room" outside.

Find yourself a medium aggressive ball in your arsenal...something like a Gamebreaker, Special Agent, Cell, Ogre SOlid or similar and try standing 20 and playing up the 10 board. Let the ball reaction tell you where to move.

Ball checks early? grab a less aggressive ball
Ball doesn't corner at all? move right with a more aggressive ball
Light pocket hit? move 2 boards right with the feet and 1 with the mark
Heavy on the headpin? move 2 left with the feet and 1 with the mark

These are not 100% absolutes but rather suggestions as to where to start.

Remember...on Sport conditions straighter is greater!!!!

Only PBAX leagues tell you which of the 5 patterns you are on.

Sport shot leagues only tell you it is some variety of a sport shot. They do not have to tell you what the pattern is.

3 - 4 summers ago I bowled on a sport shot league. We had 15 reverse block (no, not flat oil) patterns in a row! I wound up using an original Black Hammer down the 3rd arrow. Even throwing a "normal" shot at a 4/7 spare with a Blue Dot didn't work. It dived into the left hand gutter!

Let's see what you're made of!

Yea so i pull the lane graphs after we we done and come to find out it waz a reverse block..This threw me off cause well because i was getting little bite of 10 and started moving left to find more but it was real inconsistant to the point where i lost all reaction. I might try multiple lines like the deep inside line and extreme out side next time in pratice. Thx for yall suggestions

Oh and to the guy who said i should have found a line in pratice. I had one and i couldn't miss the pocket. Come middle of 1st game it up and dissappear so think i cant line up i just need sum suggestions to clear my head!

A couple of suggestiona:

- Bring balls that arc and have small backends. Control balls usually work better. Leave all your skid/flip balls home - you know, the ones that go 50 feet and make a left turn. They'll just get you in trouble on sport shots.

- throw a plastic ball straight at all spares. Do not use your normal release.

- try to find lines that give you not only a reaction, but also area left and right.

good luck.

Its amazing the great advice you get on BRs.

Something else you can try, if you don't aready.  Stand where you stand to throw at your 10 pin and thorw at the 10 pin withyour strike release, and watch the reaction.  Same for the 7 pin.  Doug Charlest and others also have great advice.  When I was fighting dry lane conditions, Ron had me use the firemens carry release with a broken wrist (not actually broken, but bent back almost with the thumb leading.  Felt funny at first, but I was amazed how it handled the dry lanes.

I bowled a PBA Challenge league over the summer and we were told that night what condition we were bowling on with a brief description of the pattern and the best way to play it. First couple of weeks I tried to throw my "THS" game and adjust from there and avg. around a buck fifty. What I did the rest of the season was just observe where the "better" bowlers who have similar games to mine were playing! Ended up avg. 185 the rest of the league, about 15 pins below my regular avg. My ball driller is an ex-LPBT star and I would watch were she was playing and if I was bowling on the same pair or next to her, I would just ask her the best way to attack certain patterns. She was always willing to offer advice and tips free of charge! Learning to play new lines with more confidence was the most I got out of the league and I'll probably do it again next year.

You make it sound so simple....excellent contribution to the topic.

Back on topic....

Try throwing balls across different parts of the lane in practice.  Don't just hang out in your comfort zone.  Try playing way outside (outside first arrow), throw balls inside of 4/5 arrow.  See what kinds of reaction you get down the lane.  You can also look around and see what is working for other people if you feel lost.

Good luck!

If i ever get lost in a game i look at who is scoring on my pair and stand on top of their line and try to mimic their ball reaction.
