How many of you guys use thumb slugs and what kind do you use? i really dont notice a difference between slugs and no slugs, but i think the one ball i dont have a slug on (btw, i use tenth frame slugs) i will put a slug in just so they are all uniform.

No thumb slugs here- and for many years no finger inserts either. First two years I had finger inserts (1993-1994) I didn't have the same feel through the release (maybe it was the type of inserts as they felt very hard on my fingers). Since 1997 I've had soft inserts and had no issues with them.

I never used thumb slugs until I returned to bowling (recently after 6 yrs).  I have to admit, at first I used tape in the hole because my thumb would exit too quickly.  Now it feels really comfortable without the tape.  A little rosin did the trick.  Even had a slug put in my older balls (Red Pearl Hammer and Pearl Synergy)

Well first you stick your finger up your n…

Here is what we do.

They make a urethane slug that you can polish up the inside of the hole pretty good. We use the sander and bevel knife to shape the hole and then when it is real close we put some fine grit (600) wet sand paper on the sander and it will really make the inside of the hole smooth.

You can get them pretty smooth by hand but using the power sander and wet paper makes quick work of it. Some slugs will polish better than others depending on how hard they are.

My first choice is Urethane, but my proshop guy quit using them because he can cut off the part of the Vise slug sticking out of the ball with a knife and not have to spend a few minutes working it down like a  Urethane. I prefer the Urethane slugs, but if my shop doesn't use them so there isn't any thing I can do about it. He cannot get the Vinyl slugs as smooth as the Urethane and if you sand even with 600 grit wet/dry sandpaper, the slugs are so soft that you end up with a larger hole and if done with a sander, it makes the problem even worse.

Brickguy,

Have you thought purchasing slugs online? I've had success with the following when I purchased slugs/inserts.

Anthony, I've given it thought, but the problem is that my driller is still the one that has to install the slug and he won't do Uerthane slugs.

Urethane slugs -- I don't know what brand.

When I first threw reactive resin my thumb would stick all the time, so the pro shop guy suggested using slugs. I've now used slugs in every single resin or particle ball since then without question.

I don't put a slug in my plastic balls.

Brick,

I'm sorry, I didn't realize that he wouldn't even install them if you provided it to him (I've heard of shops that stop carrying a type of slug but will still install anything).  It takes less than a minute to cut down a urethane slug and you get the feel you want.
