HELP!!!!!
« on: April 22, 2008, 02:08:30 PM »
Okay,so where do  I start???  I have not bowled in about 8 years, I REALLY missed the sport!  And now have the time and energy to return! (YEEEEEES!!!!!)  Here are some questions.....  The last league i bowled in  I was a solid 195-200 avg. bowler.  I used a danger zone, black ice, an a red alert.  Those balls were good for me.  Now, I moved away from one city to another, and in the process I lost all of my equipment.  I dont know how you do that but I did.  So before I make any impulse buys I need some help to put me in the right direction to buy some new equipment.  Balls have change a lot since I had to buy one!  I have been looking at the Morich products, I really have my eyes on the levrg (the black one with the blue and pink swirls) I looks like a good fit for me.  How long has this company been around I have not heard of them?  Anyway what is a good idea for a second ball?   Now... i have not thrown a ball in 8 years, im 31, but im in good shape so i know I can still throw a 16 pounder. hahahaha   Any help is good, please help!!!! :-)

Absolute BEST ball on the market right now for medium to heavy oil is the Cell!!! I cannot say enough good things about it! Read the posts in the Roto Grip forum and go to their website.Best ball in 27 years!

Yep, I agree with the Cell suggestion.  If I lost all of my equipment and I could only buy one ball, I would buy a Cell.

MoRich was born out of Mo Pinel, he was the brain behind the old Hammers.

The LevRG needs oil.  Lots of oil and ball speed.  If you do not have that in your house then do not choose this ball.

What I would suggest is that you first have a discussion with our local pro shop about the local shot.  It might be dry, medium, heavy.  Today's equipment is very condition specific.  So you need to know what you will be bowling on a majority of the time.

The heavy oil balls are truely heavy oil.  They are not usable on dry or even medium conditions.  Balls like The Fury, The LevRG, the Gamebreaker, The Cell DSequire a lot of oil to keep from losing too much power at the pins.  Even so, it also depends on your comfort zone on where you prefer to play the lanes.  If you like the play the 10 board, then you might have more of a choice.  But if you prefer to shoot off the corner, then a dull heavy oil ball might roll out before it gets to the pins.

Its confusing.  Because the hook ratings are misleading.  The LevRG says BIG HOOK, The Cell says BIG HOOK.  But on the wrong conditions they are useless.

So here's what I'd do if I were in your shoes.  I pick a more medium ball.  At least until you get your feet under you again.  The Hammer Black Widow Bite, the  Hammer Toxic, the Ebonite Raid, the Columbia Rival and maybe Momentum.  All good balls, of various price points to get your feet wet.  The Brunswick Sidewinder, not bad as well as the Avalanche at a bit lower price point.   Depending on your budget.  You've bowled before at a high level, so there's no need to start at the Groove, Scout, Tropical Storm or Tornado level.

I have the LevRG, and I can honestly tell you that it needs a lot of oil to get down the lane.  Morich also has some other offerings that are less dull.  Like the NsaneLevRG and the Solid LevRG.  I've also thrown the Bite, The Cell, The Hammer Anger.  The Anger too, needs some head oil.  soi like I said, the best bet is to talk to your local shop and match up your balls speed with cover stock to lane condition.

I agree pretty much with all Atochabsh said.  Talk to your proshop first and if possible have them watch you bowl.  But since you said you lost all of your old equipment, that may be difficult to do.

If you are planning on joining a league, find out what type of lane conditions are put out for the leagues.  You may want to start with a solid medium reactive ball as your first choice and a plastic spare ball as your second choice.  A solid medium ball would be a good starting point because you can easily change the surface if needed and you would be able to tell if you need to go to a heavier oil ball later or a lighter oil ball, once you get your timing back.  The plastic spare ball will always come in handy as a dry lane ball if needed.

If you are just going to be doing open bowling, generally lanes are a bit drier but talk to the proshop first and confirm this.  You may need just a light or medium-light ball to start out with.

I have not mentioned any specific brand names because there are so many good choices available.  Talk to your proshop or browse in the forums here.  Everyone has their favorites but that might not be good for you.

I just noticed that you could still pick up a brand new Danger Zone if you wanted to.  Also, 16# is not really as necessary as it once was to post higher scores, so go with the weight that feels comfortable for you.

The Cell is a good ball but needs oil up front. If I had to get one ball, it would be something like Track's Arsenal Artillery or Original Inferno. Both good choices and versatile.
