Magic Carpet/Velcro
« on: December 01, 2008, 03:57:49 PM »
Is there anyone that can't bowl properly/well without this stuff?  I'm thinking about getting some because I'm forced to use a good amount of grip pressure to hang onto the ball.  Not the death grip but it's still plenty.  Hoping this stuff would help.

i tried the magic carpet, helped at first but then just tore my thumb up. i would strongly advise that you spend time on getting the ball to fit right first. i messed with pitches and thumb size for about 2 years, ended up right where i started as far as pitches go. my problem had more to do with release point, than anything else. just my 2 cents.

I've used it before but I'm not using it currently. For what it's built to do, it works. But you better sure as shootin' not grab the ball on the way down. You'll hang up in it and not forget the experience.

What finally convinced me to fix things with simple tape is that my hand shape, when completely relaxed, doesn't leave me with a straight thumb. My relaxed thumb has quite a bit of angle in the joint, so to flatten it out and thus get the benefit from the Magic Carpet, I actually had to do something that wasn't really relaxed at all -- especially when I was trying to throw straight and hard at spares. In other words, even when my hand is completely relaxed, I "knuckle" it a little just because of my thumb's construction.

I did, however, work with Ron and listen carefully to his advice, and I've adjusted the size of my thumbhole and amount of tape I now use significantly. Ron is a great teacher. And I could probably still use his product and make it work, but I'd have to spend a lot of practice time on straight-shooting at spares before unveiling my technique in league or tournament play.

Bottom line, it's worth a shot, and Ron's product beats the heck out of Velcro if for no other reason than the adhesive he uses on his product. No residue, you can move it around quite a few times before it gives out and it's cut and shaped properly for the thumbhole.

ON EDIT: I had no trouble with its effect on my skin. It feels a little scratchy at first, but it caused me no trouble even after bowling for several games.

I have been using Magic Carpet for 2 or 3 years now and won't bowl without it.  I have had no skin issues.  Every bowling ball I have drilled for the Carpet.
