take your thumb out and throw it 2 handed like the rest of these jokers

Those who can't bowl, bowl with two hands.

For people who shrink during bowling we used to suggest getting an oval thumb insert that was tight. You could put in on your thumb for a while before starting and it would compress their thumbs. Fairly inexpensive.

Cold water can help, sometimes wrapping it in a towel/handkerchief and compressing it helps.

I suggest you're perfectly normal. Human digits do swell and shrink normally for many reasons to varying degrees. For bowler's thumb holes, you have it made as large as your thumb will ever get and then use tape in the hole or on your thumb or both to to adjust the hole and your thumb to one another.

Your thumb hole is not the proper size.  You should have enough room in your thumb for six or seven pieces of tape so you can adjust your thumb hole to the size of the thumb as it shrinks and swells.  PBA players will use ten to twelve pieces of tape due how much their thumb can swell bowling blocks of many games during a tournament.

I don't use a lot of tape - i just don't like it-- and until just recently i have not had an issue with my thumb hole. i don't know why i am now since i have been bowling for over 40 years. - I WILL NOT USE CHANGEABLE THUMBS! i dont like the fact that you have to drill a larger hole in the ball - and i belive it will effect the resale value.

You don't have to use A lot of tape, but you need something to adjust the size of the thumb hole. I normally  use 0 - 4 pieces of tape, depending on what size my thumb is at the time I'm bowling.
EVERYONE's fingers swell and shrink at different rates, no exceptions, unless you're not human.

As for "40 years", polyester, urethane and resin all swell and shrink themselves at different rates. I have to use more tape for resin balls than I do for Polyester (spare) balls or urethane balls.

I used to have the same problem. Then I started using the Vise IT system. Allows you to have multiple thumb slugs and can whichever one fits. You can also change thumbs throughout the night as your thumb swells or shrinks. The initial investment can be expensive, but I think it is well worth it.

Dealing with a lot of tape stinks.  Removing the tape and the residue mess is a hassle.  Large amounts of tape also change the span a bit.  There are a lot of things that can cause this problem.  Temperature is a big one.  Also changes in your health.  A GOOD pro shop should be able to help you figure what the issue is being caused by.  My guess would be that you might have gained a little weight and my be retaining some fluids  That is one of the more common causes.  But have your pro shop check for sure.

I also forgot:  When you add a lot of tape it changes the pressure points inside the thumb hole causing irritations.  This eventually causes the thumb to swell again or even more.

Perhaps you should learn the proper way to use tape.  Go to Ron C's website and read his excellent articles on how to use tape.

I  already am seeing an excellent pro shop -- it is not that persons fault  --- i have always liked a tight thumb fit -- and i have NEVER  had this problem until just recently. it may because i am getting older, and or the weather. i will probably just use some tape for now. if i keep having issues i will have a different thumb slug installed. thanks for the input.

Tape the hole or tape your thumb. I prefer the latter.

Those that can do. Those that can't complain. Pimpin ain't easy, but it's mandatory.
