Half lucky ?
« on: August 20, 2004, 03:56:07 AM »
Do you consider a half pocket shot that carries a lucky shot?

I do not.

While I try to pack every shot, I do not look at half pocket shot that carries as a lucky shot. Someone who throws an effective ball should carry a large percentage of those types of shots.

Now a trip 2 pin, a nose dive, a back door, or a Brooklyn shot that carries is lucky.

I call a back door a trip four pin if right handed or 6 pin if lefthanded.  Pin comes out of pit and knocks it forward hence back door.

A backdoor to me is when you miss the headpin completely and then a pin comes out of the pit taking out the pins left generally the 1-2-4 for a right handed bowler.

Makes sense.  I stand corrected.  I wouldn't call a trip 4 or 6 luck anyway.

Before resin, tripping deuces would have been more luck but with today's equipment and some very clean backends, tripping the deuce has become one of the lite pocket hits to the guys who snap that hard whether with axis rotation or revs.

It all depends on how you decide to open up the pocket area, if the backs are flying, you have to play away from it to let the ball turn up late and very sharp.

If it has good carrydown, then I aim for high flush or to trip 4's to optimize the pocket area.  Just a matter of what the lanes give you...just my 2 cents.

I guess erroring on light side of pocket is safer with the newer/stronger balls.

This is one thing I always do when lining up in the 9th and 10th if I have them all going in.  Always light to carry shakers and wall shots....never go high when you have them all going in.  JMO.

The reason is that it is not really a pocket hit. You can hit higher and leave a bucket. Nobody lines up for that shot, because 1 board right is an ugly washout and 1 board higher is a bucket.

If it's hits the 1-3, isn't that considered to be the pocket?  Regardless of what angle it makes contact?  I agree that the miss right is a wash but the little higher hit should produce the 2-8, 2-10 or 2-8-10 combo with that angle entry.  I also agree Bob that guys don't purposely line up for a 2 pin trip but flingers or guys who can break that late aren't lined up to much anyway..except right...

I also think light pocket carry relates on how well you are releasing the ball at the given time, because the pins seem to know if you are puring the shot or not. Sometimes when i throw a shot and seem not to get out of it clean ever so slightly, chances are I would leave the 10 even on a flush hit. But when you are really letting go of it clean, even hits that are behind the headpin seem to fall.
