Thumb tape
« on: November 28, 2011, 10:48:18 PM »
Need a few suggestions on a problem i'm sure other bowlers face: If my thumb hole already has a peice of white tape in it ( on the back of the hole ) and i add another piece on top of that piece then the hole becomes too tight where my thumb sticks getting out of the ball, so my question is if anybody has experienced this and what they did to solve this problem to where the thumb hole is tighter but yet not restrictive to where a quality release can be done

I use white tape in the front and back and have zero hang up issues, the texture may be too much for some but I don't have that issue.

I use Capet tape.... But thumb swells up too much after back to back to back nights/days of bowling, so went back to white tape back and front. But, there are times When I am between sizes with the white tape, so I use Valentino Frank'n tape over the white tape on the back side. Still get the snug feel with smooth release. It's all about feel.....

Btw, Magic carpet is a great product.....a must try....others have used it but their baby soft skin can't handle it lol.... Just kidding rayn...

Hey bowler 801,

IMHO, I also use white on the front and back of my thumb, have for years without a problem but "feel" is unique to each individual.

In answer to your question, I have also cut tape smaller than the 3/4 inch (the already smaller piece) or if you can find what was old finger tape (1/2 inch pre-cut) and try that.

Another trick I use and teach is to take another piece of tape and lower
it from your original piece by a good half inch. When we just add another piece of tape over the existing piece, it can snug the top of the hole too much and still leave the bottom loose because the meatier part of our thumb is closer to the top of the thumb hole.  By lowering the tape, we create a small taper which contours more to our natural thumb shape. Hope this helps some...

Rick, i'm glad you posted this, I have also been doing this for quite some time as the top of my thumb is way bigger. It is so much easier to drill a large hole and not modify it besides some bevel and then shape the hole with tape to accommodate your thumb's natural shape in my opinion because its very difficult to replicate the shape when working out thumb holes. I have a mental note of where I start tape wise in all my equipment (ex 4 white in front, 2 in back) and adjust as needed from there and have all the options i need and no thumb issues.

I have tried various combinations, but found the thumb tape works best for me.  I like the purple tape from Turbo.

There are new types of tape that you apply to your thumb or fingers as well as your thumb hole.  They come in various thickness and width.  You might experiment with those instead of the tape in the thumb hole.
