adjusting for better carry - what would you do?
« on: February 07, 2005, 11:38:28 AM »
ok, so i am bowling on some fried-headed, moderate carrydown lanes.

ball: stack-drilled ultimate inferno, box (800) finish.

the ball is finishing weak when i hit the pocket, pretty much like it isn't going into the 'heavy roll'. i adjust left and try to find some dry... and the ball revs up and goes in high-flush but super-sharp,  leaving me a beautiful 6-7. i take some hand off and the ball won't finish. i play a few board right, a few boards left, but the ball either breaks too hard or hits carrydown and won't wind up.

moving left avoids the carrydown, but the ball breaks too sharp and eats my lunch. if i try to come inside more, i get fluffy, puffy senior-citizen strikes and no margin of carry.

i understand that i could change balls, but i have nothing for serious carrydown after the fried heads. i guess i am really asking, what should i have done differently? i ended up throwing a 20ish MPH stroker up 5 and letting the hook-in-a-box work for me.

i don't care who makes it, how much it costs, or how sexy the ball looks. can i carry the 7 and level the deck with a $60 ball?

change the surface. Personally, I'd add a little shine to it.

I gotta agree with rev.  The ultimate is a really strong ball in box finish and is prone to burning up so add some polish to it and see what happens.

If the heads are fried, the ultimate won't even make it to 45 feet before it rolls out. If you shine it up, it'll have a better chance, but will still probably roll out.
I'd recommend a weaker pearl for fried heads, with a layout designed for some flip, so you can get enough angle to go through the carrydown.

1) Polished particle pearls work wonders on this kind of shot. They won't read the fried heads and also can handle a decent amount of carrydown.

2) I would also consider Sawbones idea of urethane equipment, as it will still make a move but you may have to be willing to sacrifice some carry.

Let us know how things work out...

cock the wrist and relax it back.  good for lowering tilt to add length as well as lowering revrate.

1revwonder, i pride myself on hand positions, release and ball speed variations. i spend ALOT of my practice time finding new ways to the pocket. i can go over 4th arrow with the inferno out to 10, and i have no issues picking up my corner pins with it as well. i am spending most of my 'crunch' time now trying to become more adept.

this situation would have been more fun to learn on, had it not been at a pot game setting i don't know that the ball was burning up, since it was making a gradual arc to the pocket and i never saw the thumbhole "roll up" on the back end. it was more of a 'hooking thru the mess' and not finishing more than a roll-out.

i was COOKING it over 3rd arrow to 10, and it would flip and snap right into the pocket. the entry angle with this line was too much, and i left numerous splits and 4 pins.

upon this realization, i toyed with some different releases as well as ball speed. too little hand gave me no discernable 'move' to the pocket, resulting in swish strikes and poor carry. i moved a tad deeper and tucked the pinky, but the over-under was way too unstable. as i said, i finally began the 11-0'clock high armswing and 20ish MPH rev monsters up 5. this worked, since i wasn't letting the ball sit in the dry long enough to burn up. lol, it won me $105 in 2 games... i wish i had the first two back tho!!! fishing is expensive,

Bones, i am looking into some urethane stuff. is there any ball you prefer?

Did you try:
Moving forward/backward on the approach?
Change how far down the lane you were targeting?
Change finger positions?

These are all things I try when lateral adjustments aren't working.
