Thumbillow, I got mine...now I can post!
« on: March 20, 2012, 10:16:23 AM »
I had been having some major fun lately!  Got me a couple of Thumbillows, finally opened up my thumbhole one drill bit size and placed a 1/8 inch thick one of these babies in the back and for a few months I have been going to Lucky town in my limited practice sessions.

For a while I was having at least one or several 9 strike games per practice session on my nice top hat shot!  Even when pretty severely broken down.

Now lately using a mid flare ball, I have had a few sessions with usually two no tap 300s in a row with  only a 7 pin leave or strike being the only throws(no other leaves)!  I've mentioned to several of my firends, there are two consecutive 300s in one of these practice sessions coming(probably will be late at night with only my GF watching).  Not bad for a bowler getting on the lanes sometimes less than every two weeks.

I see these inserts as nothing dramatically different in concept than my well respected friend Ron Clifton's Magic Carpet or the Mastergrip Shur cushions.  For some reason both of those products irritate the back of my thumb.  The Thumbillow does not!

What ever the material is it is smooth and holds till I want to release!

I was recently VERY bummed to find out that they had discontinued making this product as I had just started to really seriously use it over the past couple of months!  Now I found some supply.

Note...One size bigger and a small increase in thumb front bevel and one is on the way!  The ads say more revs and more control.  I concur.

Regards,

Luckylefty

PS many bowlers like the more recent slidey tape attached to the  back of the thumb, seems like a good idea BUT it cannot make up for thumb shrink/swell like all the players in this more foamy thumb backing field!

I just got a post....

1.  What is it?  It is a foam backed insert for the back of your thumbhole.  It takes up slack in the back of your thumb and puts the thumb flat against the front surface of the hole.   The material on the foam I wish I knew, it is smooth yet tacky enough to keep one in the thumb hole till just the right time.

2.  Where can you find it?  I found when I did a search on google.  It was coming in mixed depth kits, I asked to come just in the 1/8 inch size(thinnest and they complied only that size for me!).

Regards,

Luckylefty

PS this is great for the oval thumb person who does not like an oval thumbhole and this will convert your round hole into an oval.  (oh, I trim mine's total width(let's say it starts at 3/4 wide down to total width of about 1/8 less or say...5/8).

LL,

Why not share the link with others that you got when you googled for the thumb billow so that every person interested doesn't have to google to find it?

I use the Thumbillow as well, one of the better products I have tried. I get mine from Dix Brown in Cincinnati OH.

LL -- Didn't I send you a Thumbillow about 5 years ago?  Anyway, I quit recommending them after I found the Magic Carpet.  The Thumbillow is great except the layers delaminate too quickly.  I still have a few left, if I remember correctly I charge $5 for one if anyone is interested.  --  JohnP

John P,

I think you did, and now I have really caught on to them.  I always turned red on the thumb with the Magic not so with this Billow!

But I believe both products very similar but the smoothness of the Billow I prefer!

REgards,

Luckylefty

PS for me opening up the thumb one size and adding some front of thumb bevel makes all the difference!

I don't use them myself but have several customers that do.  They do help keep you from knuckling your thumb.  They also take up a little room in the front of the thumb hole, so you may have to make it slightly larger.  I use a tiny drop of super glue between the top of the Thumb Straight and the hole to be sure it stays in place.  --  JohnP

I tried them and didn't like them. They change the pitch of your thumb hole and I didn't want to spend a lot of money plugging and redrilling my thumb holes to find the proper pitch using the Thumb Straight. Found teh Magic Carpet to be a better solution.

Sorry LL,

Please don't unleash your converted armswing on me, I beg of you. LOL, I didn't know if you were searching for a place that still had them. I will not breath a word of this again!!

Does anyone know what the difference is between the Thumbillow and the Ace Mitchell Sheer Cushion? (see link of Sheer Cushion)

TDC, don't worry I won't throw 3 straight 300s at you...unless...

Brick,

The Shur cushion is exactly the same concept as the Thumbillow and usually about $4 cheaper per 1!

I find the plastic on the Shur cushion irritates my thumb, the Thumbbillow doesn't!  FOR me!
