Anyone find they throw a heavier ball MORE properly!?
« on: October 30, 2005, 08:37:39 AM »
When I first tried lefty bowling for one season 25 years ago I first tried 12...then 14 and was ready to quit(I switched from an injury that stopped me bowling 15 years before as a righty and went straight back in to the game lefty).

Finally I said one more shot and I tried the hottest ball of the time...a yellow dot...got a fingertime drilling and tried 16.  Well I had a great second half of the season and some outstanding still memberable accomplishments.

So then life intervened and I started bowling again about 20 years after that(my second lefty season).  This time I started right off using alley shoes and a 16 pound ball.  First tourney I made a nice impression and I said...I'll try this again.  Got some shoes of my own and boom(they were sticky compared to what I was used to) hurt my lead hip.

It did not get better until I got some Dexter SST 5s and went down to 15.
I liked the heavier looking roll of my 16 but hip still hurt.

Just recently I got stuck by a fellow BR member in a trade for a so called 15that ended up 15 lbs 15.9 ounces.  He still thinks 15!

Anyway I said I'd like to try.  Drilled up...only put fingerholes in with no inserts(my usual).  Put fingerholes 1/8 forward and I LOVED the way I threw the thing today!

I'm a medium strong guy of about 220 pounds and with 15 I don't feel much.  With this thing I FEEL all the forces of gravity in beginning and seem to be freeer armed.  Shorter backswing.  More in synch to drive the ball forward with the legs in synch!

It seems like I've gone thru this before!!!

Anyone experience the same thing?

REgards,

Luckylefty
PS I've had a 299 in practice once with a misorder by my proshop I didn't want to stick him with!  But hip was still tender then!!!

I used to trow all 16 but lately i have found more control with 15 and even heavy 14's. I don't know why but i just like the feel better. I ordered a spare ball out  of my proshop yesterday and wanted a heavy 14 and the guy in the proshop asked if I was feeling ok because A guy my age and size(16,soon to be 17 260lbs) should be able to bowl with a 16, so I had to explain it to him.

I have thrown 15# balls since the mid 1980's. Early this year due partly to some health problems, I decided to drop to 14# balls and initially loved them. As I became used to them, I found myself trying to muscle them more and more everytime I went bowling and things began to get bad. Six weeks or so ago, I dug one of my old 15# balls out of the closet and took it with me to the lanes.

I tried it and couldn't get over how much easier it was to swing the ball and easier to release with better leverage with less effort and so forth, so I have decided to return to 15# balls of which I will be doing shortly as soon as I get my grip stabilized. I am currently going thru some changes and using my 14# balls to plug and redrill and test for this since I will not longer be using them.

In my opinion---less weight is great for those who have static swings, that are the same no matter what weight they throw. 15 lbs allows them to alter release a little easier. People who have problems with keeping the same tempo, ball speed, swing length, etc, tend to have problems throwing lighter weights---their armswing tends to come out of whack because they can control the ball to easily. As opposed to have a swing, the ball is forced into the most comfortable position---not the best thing for the score.

Thanks guys.

I think most of you have defined what I felt...that being the extra weight I could not fling around (in my case incorrectly) in the initial stages fo swing and therefore got more in sync!!  I could really feel my timing.

The other guy....very interesting analysis of a bowling problem.

NOTHUMB, exactly!!!!!! You described me well here and now I know even more why I am having problems with the 14's.

Yes when i first started bowling used 16 lbs for 2 seasons i rolled the ball great and could not overpower the ball like i can now with 15 lb. I even tried a 14lb last season but it was way way light for me, i could rev the heck out of it and also throw it 21-22 mph with ease. Lost all free are swing with 14 lb, 15 lb is a better choice for me since 16 lb gives me serious tendanatis in my fore arm area for about 2-3 days after bowling each time.

For me 16 lb forced my tempo to flow better and i had to properly leverage the ball in the swing but the pain was too much to stand each session for the extra carry i got from it. I do think pins seem to fly around better but it is easier to find good deals for in 15 lb since most of the bowlers use 15 lb stuff.
